How our service reminder countdown ACTUALLY works

From BMW TSB B12 25 05

CBS4 was first introduced with the E90 and it differs from the previous CBS2 and CBS3 systems in regards to how the "Engine Oil Service" is calculated.

The CBS4 starting point, of 25,000 km or 15,534 miles for engine oil, is initiated during the PDI - QC1 Handover Inspection with the entry of the "Date of Registration" or after a CBS reset. The Instrument Cluster will round up this data value sent from the DME and begin with a display of 16,000 miles. The countdown until "Service Due" for engine oil is based primarily on the fuel consumption value as calculated by the DME.

The CBS4 algorithm in the DME uses the following fuel consumption averages to achieve the 15,534 target oil service mileage.

N52 with automatic transmission = 21.4 mpg

N52 with manual transmission = 21.7 mpg

Actual fuel consumption above or below these averages may increase or decrease the target service mileage accordingly.

The displayed mileage until service is due, beginning at 16,000 miles, will decrease in 1000 mile increments until approximately 5000 miles remain. It then decreases in 100 mile increments until 500 miles remain, and finally in 10 mile increments until due.

What if the DME resets or clears? If you unhooked the battery for long enough in some cars it would reset the DME!, Is it possible to reset the DME? and is that in the instrument cluster?

Reason why i ask is I have a reletive that will need a new cluster on his e90 ( because of a botched gage mod) and I was just curious ... Any ideas?

Thanx

No, E90 stores info in 3 different locations, none of which are affected by removing power.

When they put in the new cluster his milage on the new cluster will be updated by the other 2 locations.

That TSB doesnt talk about the oil quality sensors that can also change the service interval

Very good thread! Thanks for the information. I know that the service interval is based upon the way the car is driven but it's interesting to know more about it. I drive all highway in the sedan and get 30 mpg on average, so my interval is way up there.

Interesting info.
IIRC from old threads on bimmerfest.com, the E46 counts down from 666 gallons of gas consumed to the next oil change.

Very good info. The only question I have is my on board computer showed 18000mi to next oil service when new (10/9/2005), it showed 16000mi at the 3000mi . Is the CBS4 on my vehicle defective?

Like what exactly? My situation is similar to what you describe. I have a tad over 4000 miles on the car and the interval is still set at 15000 from PDI, so to account for rounding errors I'm at least at 18000 before oil change needed, although I'll surely hit the 1 year anniversary way before. OBTW, in addition to the countdown timer, there is also a suggested date of 8/2007 I believe based on what the BC knows of my driving habits.

Hi DJRobb,
I am beginning to see that pattern emerging. Thanks.

As a follow up: I am at 3600mi and the interval now says 15000mi (went from 16000 to 15000 at 3500mi mark) My suggested date 7/2007. But as you said, I will also hit the one year anniversary "free" oil change long before 18000mi (only 7 months away). I also changed oil and filter at 1500mi (the old BMW recommended break-in oil service interval)

probably more than 80% of e90 owners will wait that long before changing oil.

I have a question about the US free scheduled maintenance.

Is it covered by indicator mileage only, or a combination of 1 year and indicator mileage which ever comes first?

The oil is changed either at the correct mileage or once a year.

Finally!! Someone posts some worth-while information on this forum. That's the kind of stuff we want here. It gets a bit old seeing the SAME silly posts on here about 'automatics vs manuals', 'IS350 vs 330', 'this kid at school keeps picking on me because I own an E90', yada yada yada....
