Grinding noise when braking
For the last few weeks my car's spent most of its time between airport car parks whilst I've been working overseas.
When I got back the car refused to budge when pulling away. When it did I felt a loud thud - which I assume was my rear brakes pulling free. After driving a 1/2 a mile the red indicator telling me to take it to a garage came on - At the moment it is 2k over for its air filter service (which is being done tomorrow). The strange thing was that the handbrake light was on regardless of the position of the handbrake. Anyway I phoned up BMW Assist to ask if it meant anything and was told that the brake pads were probably worn and that I should book it in 1st thing Monday morning. As it was early morning I did just drive home, as I didn't want to hang around at the airport. The brakes on the drive home were grinding and didn't really feel responsive. I've been out to examine the car today (not driven) and can see scoring on the rear discs. The handbrake light is now normal though. Anyone else experienced this - or this another "si value added feature?" The question is whether I should tell the stealer to look at the brakes as it might have been caused by the car being left standing for a long period - as its usually used daily. The car is off to the stealer for 1 to 2 weeks to sort out this irritating starting problem so it'll be another thing for them to look at.

Your pad may have separated from the backing. I had that happen on another car with the same symptoms you describe other than the handbrake light. There was a thud, grinding, and scoring. When I looked I saw the remnants of the pad dislodged from the caliper.
I wouldn't think two weeks idle would have an effect on the brakepads unless they were defective.

Thanks SoYank - I couldn't see any bits of my pad but will ask stealer to check them anyway.
JJ maybe I need to have colour cordinated calipers to match my pads...
