For those who have added oil to their 335i, a little help please

Car says I'm 1 quart low. I've got my BMW full synthetic oil, I've got my oil funnel. I twisted and flipped the oil cover open, and when I look inside the oil cover opening, I see a hole a few inches down that is about nickel-sized. I'm guessing that is where I put the funnel and start to pour (I need the funnel right?)? Sorry for the noob-like question, I just don't usually add my own oil. Never have had to in the past.

Funnel is good for keeping oil off of stuff, sure.

Sounds like you got it going in the correct hole, the only thing I'd do is make certain to check your oil level again on a level surface to confirm that you are indeed low.

No worries, I know the nickel size opening you are talking about but yeah, in it goes no need to worry about the nickel size hole.

No need for a funnel if you have a steady hand, it might avoid spills if you dont though.

Thanks again. Got it all taken care of earlier tonight. Just used the BMW 5w-30 and the little cardboard/paper funnel they give in the oil kit. Worked just fine. Glad to know I didn't have to get it perfectly in that little hole within the oil cover opening. Didn't really see the need for the funnel but I guess it didn't hurt.

Should have bought it to a dealer and they would add oil for you on-the-spot free of charge.

Yeah but I had the oil right here at home, and the service department is closed on Saturdays. I just wanted to do it myself.

I prefer to go to the dealer and let them do it. It just takes a minute and there is a record of it just in case something pops up later. If I were the dealer and you came to me with an engine problem I would be skeptical if you said you had been adding oil to the engine for some time.
I'm probably being a little paranoid but, in this case, being careful doesn't cost anything.

I see. If the dealer wasn't closed (service), I would have let them do it so I didn't have to waste my quart of oil. And certainly having it done for free is nice. But, unless I told my dealer I had been adding oil into the coolant and gas tank I think they would be fine with me taking care of my car, especially considering that adding oil when the car needs it is usually good for the car, as opposed to bad.

I don't think it is based upon state you're in. I think it is just based upon the dealer.

I put the oil in, and everything went smooth. No longer getting the 1 quart low warning light and car is running just fine.
