My MY17 is on order for week 18 production. I'm wondering what tires have been on recently My17's people have received. Are they Michelin PSS, PS4S, or Conti EC or ECS? Is there a way to request a specific tire to ensure I get the tire on the vehicle prior to production?

It won't the PS 4s as they don't have a BMW "star" version yet. If you get the Cont's like I did just dump them and get the PSS or PS 4S. Changed mine out a few weeks ago and its pretty amazing how much better the michelins are. I went with the 4s

Exactly.

No reason to have( or complain about which version of ) 6 year old michelins or contis on your vehicle when there are new versions of both are out.

Buy fresh new tires.
Dump OE tires on eBay/Craigslist /letgo etc

Performance tires for both (MPSS and CSC3). Don't get all seasons for this car - get proper winter tires if you need to.

All-seasons are a compromise between two actually properly designed tires. The MPSS are performance tires and ok down to say 45F or so before they start to slip and lose traction as the rubber hardens with the cold.

The all-seasons, like AS3, don't go much lower in temperature compared to the MPSS, but are much better at handling colder, wet conditions.

If you'll be driving during the winter, and if temperatures are consistently below 32F, then you should get winter tires. The rubber is designed to work at the low temperatures and not lose traction, plus their wet performance is much superior to all-seasons, especially if you run into icy patches.

PS: if you expect to drive in snow in any way, shape or form, get winter tires. All-seasons will not cut it with the low-end grunt the M2 has.

I have a winter set for my 535i and am just south of you. If the M2 is your daily driver, definitely get a dedicated winter set. Don't compromise with all seasons.

I have the pilot sport AS3+ on my X1.

If you can handle the compromise of an all season tire for winter use. Go ahead and get them. They are excellent in light snow and cold weather.

They do not feel very sporty for summer driving however. I previously had Pirelli P Zeros on my X1 which were a dedicated summer tire. The handling of my X1 feels absolutely dull in comparison now. Last summer I went on several driving tours with it and this year I will take the 1M with its true summer tires.

I wouldn't want to run the Pilot sport as3 all year round on car like the M2 .. but if you have dedicated winter wheels then they would probably be a great option if you never get a foot of snow

While gmzanatta is generally giving a good recommendation , its easy to tell from his opinion that's is likely not based on EXPERIENCE driving an all season tire in say... the current decade ...


I would have to say that the best reason NOT to go with an all season tire isn't because of poor snow traction .. the AS3+ is EXCELLENT in light to moderate snow depths down to the high zeros in temps... WELL below 32 degrees.

I had zero issues in 6" of snow and temps down to 3 degrees FAHRENHEIT in Indiana as well as freezing rain and ice in Missouri this past December.

Need to drive in 10" of snow regularly ? Get snow tires. Need to potentially make it through 10" on one occasion ? A true high performance All season will do.

I won't be driving the M2 anyway if there's any snow. Seems like winter tires will be good for lower temperatures Dec - March and summer tires otherwise. I've never used winter tires though. How do they compare in terms of ride quality, road noise, etc?

I disagree on the snow thing based on experience. All-season's will not handle well with the M2 - maybe on the X1 is ok especially if it's the new FWD ones, but the M2 has such a stupid amount of low end torque going only to the rear wheels that you will not be able to keep traction with all-seasons on even an inch of snow.

There are far and few between those who will exact such a performance standard from their tires in slalom or on the track where they will require the new version of these tires the 4s. While the MPSS design is 6 years old they have been tweaked slightly throughout the life cycle and the rubber received is fresh. Use em, burn em, then replace them I would say. 99% are kidding themselves if they think they need better.

Depends on how you set them up - usually ride quality will be a bit softer and with less grip. Road noise wise, I found mine to be less noisy than the MPSS, but not by much.

I guess my advice is this: if you are going to get a second dedicated set of tires for the winter months, get winter tires and not all seasons.

If you're only going to use one set of tires, keep the MPSS and don't drive when it's close to or below freezing.

Agree it's overkill. That's advice specifically for anyone that whines about the same difference you just highlighted that exists between the MPSS and the continental. ( which also likely was improved over its life cycle as well. ) or feels that their M2 has been compromised by continentals.

Tires are temporary and for all it's accolades the MPSS is now equivalent to an iPhone SE when there is an iPhone 7 and a Samsung G8 out ..

I was browsing getbmwparts and noticed they have a set of winter tires/wheels available for the M2 (believe they're 18"s) that come with the Michelin Alpin for something like $2300

I have that set, the Alpin4's are great. A bit dodgy on really loose fluffy snow would be my only complaint.
