New Ford Fiesta ST - A Great Car Getting Worse?

Well not necessarily worse, buy they are replacing the 1.6 litre unit with a 1.5 litre 3 cylinder power unit .......... that will run on 2 cylinders when its not being pushed.

Advantages? Obviously less emissions and less weight, but will it spoil the driving experience?

I guess times are moving on, and the push to reduce cylinders.

Reduced friction/pumping losses by having one less cylinder is another trick up the manufacturers sleeve to meet emissions targets.

The BMW 1.5 3 pot in the i8 (and other BMW and MINi modes) seems to be highly regarded.

3 pot engine are inherently unbalanced so implelemnting cylinder deactivation is either a feat of technical genius or a complete disaster. At least Ford fit balancer shafts to the 3 pot Ecoboost engines. VAG recon they don't need them but based on my experience with our 3 pot Citigo I would disagree.

They've made it sound reasonable for a 3 cylinder.

Shame a guy on a cycle can keep up with it.

My sister has the VAG 1.4 ACT in her seat Ibiza and it's like you say. She hates it.

I'm confused...
Wife has an Ibiza FR 1.4 Eco tsi with "active cylinder trchnology".
It's a 4 cylinder that can revert to 2 cylinder mode under light load.
Has 150 ps with plenty of torque from the low pressure turbo engine and would have been considered hot hatch fast 10 years ago...but 40 mpg if you thrash it and 50 if you don't .
Considered one of VAG's best engines.

Confused about what? She hates it and the switch between the cylinders is really prominent.

Confused because the talk was of 3 cyl engines, the one in our car has 4 cylinders, the switch to two cylinders and back is barely perceptible and I consider it to be a fine engine for what it is.
So are we talking about the same engine?
If so, your sister doesn't know much...a common condition I find when women talk about cars.

Yes it my be a 3 cyl but my reference was around ACT, so its valid, as the ST switches to 2 cyl when not using 3.

You don't know my sister so what a silly comment. In her car its VERY pronounced. Yes it shouldn't be but it is and Seat refuse to acknowledge theres a problem. You can keep your ACT if theres a chance you can get one like hers and have to live with it.

The 3 cylinder in the Ibiza is a 1.0,NOT a 1.4,so that's where the confusion started and subsequently you obviously didn't read my post.
The 1.0 produces a whole 75ps,so it hasn't got much power to deactivate in the first place.
Relax,my comments about your sister were in jest, but if she had picked the most powerful engine in the range, like we have done with our 1 Series, she would have been a lot happier.

Conclusion:don't buy a 3 cylinder engine in a Ibiza,Fiesta or anything else.

My Mrs has the 1.4 CoD engine in her Audi A1 Black Edition.

I can vouch for it being a fantastic little engine. Provides plenty of torque. Best VAG engine imo in the range. Brilliant with the s tronic box.

Don't shoot me down but I find this car more fun then my 440i ( well sometimes anyway )

Little 'nippy' powerful cars are always more fun, I've had more fun driving the balls off a fiesta ST than my 330d, well it's a different fun!

We've just 'helped' our 18yr old buy a nearly new 1.0 Fiesta Zetec S. Its a 3 cylinder turbo and to be honest I was surprised at how smooth and nippy it was. Produces 125bhp I think. Impressive as it averages 45mpg too.

Bluefin remap gives 150bhp. Out of the three 1.0 Ecoboost variants the 125 has the flattest torque curve. It's the one I would go for in a Titanium X model.

Agree, I felt a bit flat with the release video, sounds ok but come on 1.5 3cyl is getting too mundane.
