New fr@ckin noise/rattle!
Started yesterday. I thought it was a leaf or something under the hood because it made a like tick noise almost a like if someone was tapping on the windshield glass with a a leaf stem so I popped the hood and cleaned up all debris that had accumulated. This morning, with temps at 59 it started again, lasted almost 20 minutes on the way to work. By then, the temps hit 69 and then magically, the ticking stopped.

It's normal. Specifically, it's the sound of the fuel injection. It will go away on it's own when the engine warms up. There's been a bunch of threads on the topic.

Amazingly, it was going when I left work this evening
No tapping. at all. How can it be the injectors? It's loud. Like someone tapping on the windshield glass.

Hey, if they figure out the "A" pillar ticking please let me know. Mine "ticks" from the vicinity of the passenger A-Pillar near the A/C vent. Comes and goes. Been to the dealer twice for it and they have not been able to fix it. I swear, these cars are put together with scotch tape or something.

The dealership has been on the phone with BMW numerous times, I would guess they or BMW would have checked the SIB. As of yesterday after replacing all gaskets the clicking/rattle has not gone away.

I think it's either the door seals and/or a/c vent
I notice that over bumps the seals make noise. It's as if the door is not staying put and it moves up and down a tiny bit. I've owned coupes before with frameless windows and i don't recall having this issue. Is the ticking also happening on smooth roads for you? The one on the passenger side of my car even ticks on smooth roads that's why I think it may be the vents.

My car has various ticking noises that appear and go away as a function of temperature and humidity changes. My new one is from the rear parcel shelf. Well, at least our cars have a sense of humor.

Hi Dannys 335i
I have the same noise as you do. I Thought it was convertible issue. I have Been to the dealer many times but they can't seem to find the source. Can you please keep us posted? Thanks. |

i took a ride with a friend in the car to help diagnose the problem
Quote:
p.s. My friend actually described the noise differently. The one from the right A-pillar sounds like raindrops are falling on the windshield. The one from the middle sounds like small hail is falling on the windshield. Last edited by undecided; 04-28-2008 at 11:54 AM.. |

Well after replacing every gasket on the windshield, door and around the cowl the noise is still there. I've been asked to give it a couple of days to see if the gaskets will seat more tightly. Ditching this car will be expensive and this will be the last BMW I ever buy.

I keep hearing people say only that only people with issues complain about BMW problems and MANY aren't here because of no problems. But whenever I read a thread about a problem, MANY other people are also having that same issue. This is ALL over the several BMW forums. I just hope I don't get one that is in the shop 6 times a year. Like MANY I have read about. Consumer reports does say the 3 series is getting much better. I SURE HOPE SO. CRAP.

Timing Chain Ticking
My 2 year old 325i started ticking under the hood - sounded like a playing card in a bicycle spoke. Turned out to be a slack timing chain on the engine. The tensioning unit was replaced. Ticking noise from the back was traced back to the diff.

I just developed the A-pillar noise a little over a week ago. Probably unrelated but it began after I put new plates on. It starts making noise around 65MPH+ and get louder when your facing into the wind. I've gone over the outside of the car a few times and can't find anything loose/broken. Even the plate holder seems to be on pretty firm. I was going to try using some double sided sticky tape behind the license plate... but it doesn't seem to be comming from directly in front of me though, it's off to the drivers side.
