2018 X3 (G01) M40i Ordering Guide - initial thoughts

Enjoyed being able to get a first look at the HEA Ordering Guide - thanks for sharing.

Nice to see Adaptive Full LED lights, auto high beams, and LED fog lights as standard. It would seem they're also serious about upgrading the X3's interior to be more competitive with other Mnfr's offerings with the addition of the Vernasca Leather line as the upholstery choice.

And as options, great to see we'll finally have the ability for front ventilated seats - a welcomed addition here in the South (especially on long drives). Helpful to also note the option of a Space-saver spare which was another request in the 'Wish List' (which may negate the need for the compressor and slime as discussed in many threads).

It was also interesting to see the wheel options, which now even offer 21" M Double-spoke wheels. Probably a natural progression to allow such with the X3M not far around the corner, but it does seem to indicate this iteration should be a different beast in the performance area c/w our current 2nd gen series. I haven't had the chance to compare different wheel sizes head-to-head on X3s of similar build, so would be interested to hear what some other forum members think.

I think the grouping of options in packages makes more sense than in the past. Nice to see things like lumbar standard and not in the premium package.

I am undecided what I want to replace my F30 with. I was considering the G30 but I have been thinking about an SUV lately. I can't wait to see the G01.

For anyone curious about Phytonic Blue C1M:

Will also be interesting to see specs and the engine line up for the UK market. Hopefully we'll get the M40i as the 2nd generation is only available with diesel engines here.

It's the same with the GLC. In the UK it's diesel only except for the GLC43 which will be the direct competitor to the 40i.

I hope that comfort seats will be an option for the G01. A few weeks ago I drove the new 5 series and its seats are the best of any BMW ever.

Never heard of Vernasca leather. Did google search and nothing pops up. Is this equivalent or a step up and closer to Nappa?

Apologies, I should have included in my initial post. 'ddanny' from Hamburg shared this on 11 Mar 2017 @ 1145AM in the thread: http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showth...1361685&page=3

For anyone curious about Phytonic Blue C1M:
Thank you for sharing the ‘Phytonic Blue’ color sample, Zirenz2006.

Although we used to drive 3, 5, and 7 series sedans, we've been sold on the 2nd gen X3 35i ever since it was released. It allows better flexibility with loading options, yet is still small enough to allow easy maneuvering in parking lots and provides nice handling. With the G01 expected to add more luxurious interiors and enhanced engine choices with improved performance and handling, we're definitely excited about the G01 as well.

Always difficult to know what is true or rumor, but on 2 Mar 2017 an Australian firm in Sydney (PerformanceDrive) shared online indications that the G01 might be ‘getting M40i, M40d, X3M, and xDrive30e variants.’ They pointed out it isn’t clear which markets will sell which variants, but if this is true, perhaps the M40d will become an option for the UK and Australia?

It’ll be interesting to see the full Option list for sure. And hopefully they will allow individualization of some choices (and not require full packages to get certain ones).

I had difficulty researching this as well. As Vernasca is a city in Northern Italy, and Italy is renowned for its fine leather production, I thought it was probably higher quality.

If you search ‘Nasca leather’ instead of ‘Vernasca’, though, more links are obtained. Not sure if it is the same but seems possible it is? In Aug 2004 a discussion on a different forum indicated Nasca was used in the 7 series with the perforated ventilated seats. This was also suggested in a book by Marc Cranswick, “The BMW 5 series and X5…”, in which it was indicated Nasca was the perforated leather positioned between the ‘base Dakota and the top of the line Nappa’ [29 Jul 2010, p.218]. Another site which discusses BMW’s types of leather: https://www.leather-dictionary.com/i...ar_leather#BMW. Note that if front ventilated seats are optioned the leather choices diminish to only three colors - the Canberra Beige/Black, Black, or Mocha (see Notes section of HEA Ordering Guide).

Glad to see all the new options available but I was really hoping for some Individuation like you can do on the 3 series to get upgraded leather with a leather dash; I was surprised it wasn't in the HEA.

Sensatec dashboard is in there as a leather alternative just like what the G30 has as an option.

My guess and it's just a guess, I have no proof, is that this will maybe be a slight upgrade to Dakota but not as nice as Nappa.

I swore off any paint other than white but wow this looks really nice!

Not surprised at LED as standard on M40i but notice that all tire options are RFTs and either all-season or mixed performance? Obviously this is a draft but no performance option? I see revisions here IMO.

We've usually accepted Standard tires on our X3 35i models, but for the X3 M40i (with its improved power and handling) we are going to take a closer look at the tire options to maximize its capabilities. But I am confused about the terminology.

Standard configuration - 19" M Double-spoke (DS) 698M style 'Performance' RFTs

Optional configurations - 19" M DS 698M 'All-Season' RFTs; 20" M DS 699M 'Mixed-performance' RFTs; and 21" M DS 718M 'Mixed-performance' RFTs

Searching the term 'Mixed-performance' online yields different opinions. Some indicate 'mixed' just means the Front and Rear tires are of different size (yet they are still 'Performance'). Page 3 of the HEA Guide would be consistent with that idea, as the 20" are Ft 20x8.0, 245/45 & Rear 20x9.5, 275/40; the 21" are Ft 21x8.5, 245/40 & Rear 21x9.5, 275/35. Yet others disagree indicating the term for that is 'Staggered'.

Others suggest 'Mixed' means different tread design on the fronts (designed for cornering) compared with the rears (designed for acceleration), yet both remain 'Performance'. Maybe someone can clarify?

Since the option for a space saver spare is now available, am also surprised they don't offer a non-RFT option - maybe this initial guide is a work in progress.

The copy of the "Draft" HEA Ordering Guide I have reads as yours with the 698M as All-Season RTFs. It is my understanding that "Mixed-Performance" tires are 3 season, "Performance" tires are summer and "All-Season" are just that...all 4 seasons...but then again, I really don't know anything about tires. I am currently driving around on Pirelli PZeros with 310Ms in snow.

Mixed Performance usually means staggered summer tires from what I've seen.

Performance = square. same size summers all around
all season = square. same size all seasons all around

I've never seen non-performance (or mixed-performance) tires on a F25 that were staggered, well at least here in the US. My 2011 F25 35i w/ the SAP package (pre-MSport) came with staggered 309s with performance Continental ContiSport 3 SSR's. This was a $600 option in 2011 with the SAP package. At some point in 2011, some F25s came with non-staggered 309s on Goodyear Eagle 245/45R19...which BMW did not label as performance tires. My 2015 F25 35i came with staggered 310Ms with performance Pirelli PZeros. I have only seen performance set ups (summer tires) as staggered.

The change vs the X4 M40i is that the G01 X3 M40i will only offer RFTs, unlike the current X4 M40i which offers 20" 680M w/non-RFT performance Michelin Pilot SSs. What does this all mean? I have no idea. Maybe someone that knows more about tires could chime in.

You still have those tires? RTFs are "piece of mind" for me despite the issues they have. I'm pretty happy with the set up mine has. Positive the X3 M40i will offer a similar setup option which you chose for yours.

I got rid of RFT on my X3 , 2 months after ownership the ride / handling improvement i get with Conti DWS not to mention i don't have to swap tires 2x a year worked for me.
I kept the MPSS on the X4 from March till November, swapped into DWS06 and don't regret it

Doesn't look like there will be a Dynamic Adaptive Suspension available based on the sheet. That would be too bad, in my opinion!

Adaptive Suspension will be part of the Standard Option in the M40i, the same way it is in the X4 M40i. My guess is, the X3 M40i will be even better.
