Insurance Renewal
Hi
Who are people using for insurance where their car has mods such as the M Performance bits? Renewal came through and its a lot higher than last year so wondered whether people were using specialist companies? |

I was in the same boat, went with A-Plan in the end, really good price and service.

It depends on how many mods you've fitted. I was with Admiral originally but moved to A-Plan Thatcham once I started getting serious with modifications. Pricing is fair, IMO, and mods are insured whereas many insurers will insure the original car only.

Adrian Flux have historically had a good reputation for insuring modified cars at reasonable rates.
Up until last August we had had three cars insured with LV for many years. They were unable to offer cover for theft on my new, manufacturer standard (non-BMW) car in August and without theft cover the quote was £200 more than similar cover (including theft) from other companies. I arranged 7 day drive away insurance through the manufacturer's scheme and the sales agent guessed the insurer I was coming from as they were based opposite them and then found a genuinely comprehensive cover elsewhere. Did have the same problem with LV 10 years ago when trying to insure a Mark 5 Golf GTI. We had a third car insured elsewhere so just swapped the cars over. And a couple of years later they provided full cover for the self-same vehicle. Will be interesting to see what they quote when I look to renew the insurance this year. |

just be mindful that some insurance say the following
All modifications done PRE registration are deemed factory, Aviva say that and also direct line... I did a quote a few days back if i added an exhaust and remap it wanted me to have a black box fitted.............. I'm 46 FFS just ask then directly they will advise... I definitely dont add BMW extras like sat nav etc, with the mod i told them it was done before REG so they accepted that....luckily for me mine was done before REG but i still declare the exhaust... |

I've found Direct Line to be very good. They want to know factory options which is no big deal but I also added a couple of cosmetic mods (black grilles and MP diffuser) which they don't charge for at all (not even an admin fee). I was thinking about the Active exhaust a few weeks ago and even that was free to add (no HP gain).

Motor insurance premiums have been hiked generally over the last year but it doesn't hurt to shop around.

Another using A-Plan Thatcham office. Been with them 3 years now and would be hard pressed to go back to dealing with a muppet in a call centre again. If you've got a number of mods then they're so much easier to deal with. Customer service is great and the price is good.

Problem is i have 2 non fault claims over the last year which were both settled and paid by the 3rd partys insurer but clearly these have a huge impact on premiums even though the claims arent my fault |

Cant see them having a big effect unless they were somehow linked and likely to repeat. Sometimes insurance companies just seem to decided they dont want your business anymore and offer you a comically high price.

Even after my total loss claim last year, Direct Line almost halved my renewal quote from ESure. Best by far.
