Downpipe and CEL

I know, yet another downpipe thread.

Is anyone successfully running a Catted Downpipe without a JB4 to clear codes specifically on a B58 340i?

If you are, what brand, how long and did you have to add anything else?

Thanks.

Most if not all brands will eventually throw a CEL. The cats are not as efficient as the OEM ones as they flow more, and BMW has really tightened the tolerances in the ECU logic so even the slightest deviation will throw the CEL.

Do you have a jb4? If not I would think that would be a better mod to do for the money

Unless downpipes are using HJS cats, you are probably going to get a CEL code at some point.

At this time i am not aware of any company that offers HJS cats for the B58.

Best option is to do Jb4 + catless

There were a couple of reasons why I was considering the Catted DP first;
1. I have a MPE installed and didn't want to increase the volume too much, I'm getting old you see
2. The catted DP should give a modest boost in performance without me having to mess with tunes etc while under warranty. I know the DP is not covered by warranty but there is an extremely low chance of f'ing something up with one.

The thing is, is that you will only see marginal gains with only a DP. The sound improvement is nice, but without something giving added boost the purpose of adding a DP will not be realized.

+1

Sound is awesome but to fully take advantage of them you need a tune. But the sound is worth it by itself, IMO.

1. With downpipe, catted or catless it is only louder during cold start and wide open throttle, not so much during casual driving

2. i dont understand what you mean here. why would a catless downpipe have a higher chance of causing any issues?

1. Agreed, even though I believe the Catted DP will be a bit quieter than the Catless DP.

2. Adding a DP period, Catted or Catless, would give a moderate boost in performance without causing any issues, there isn't much to fail and cause an issue. My original point was mainly mentioning the lower possibility of engine failure (or work to be covered under warranty) with a DP as opposed to Electronic gadgets that manipulate the engine parameters (not saying the JB4 will definitely cause problems).

I understand that the DP and JB4 would be the best solution in this case but I didn't want to add Electronic gadgets to the engine just yet. Hence my search for a DP that wouldn't throw CELs.

I cannot answer your first question as I have yet to install a catted downpipe on my wife's 340i, but I have essentially the same questions as you.

According to my research, there is indeed a downpipe available for the 340i that (i) uses a HJS catalytic converter, (ii) meets Euro 6 emissions regulations, and (iii) is claimed to yield CEL-free results. It is produced by HJS and sold by Fabspeed—http://www.fabspeed.com/bmw-340i-440...tted-downpipe/. The claimed horsepower and torque increases are impressive too. I am not aware of anyone using this downpipe on a B58-equipped car, but perhaps my search skills leave something to be desired.

I recall reading that Fabspeed is developing their own catted downpipe for the B58 engine, and it will use 200 cell-per-square-inch HJS catalytic converters. Given their pricing structure, I expect its price will be less than the aforesaid HJS catted downpipe.

I've been running it with no issue I love it. Great sound addition to my dinan exhaust really feel it on the low end. I installed it in conjunction with the BMS intake and no issue of any kind.

You are running a JB4 arent you? The JB clears CELs. I'm hoping to find out how it works without a JB.

Wouldn't it still give me a code when I run codes? I did a code read about 30 minutes into driving and it gave me nothing tried again a couple days later and still didn't get anything.

The JB will clear the DP related codes. If you set JB to map0 you will turn the code clearing off so you can see if the CEL will come on.. Can take a day or two for it to come on though.

I ran it 0 when I took it into the dealer for my alignment last week after I lowered it and left it on there on accident because I forgot to turn it back over the weekend and no issue.
