Help with ticking noise
I pulled my 2011 E90 into the garage this afternoon and noticed a loud ticking noise. The car had just been started and pulled around to the alley. It was a cold start on a relatively warm day in Colorado.
Here is a video I took so you could hear it. The engine was as the highest RPM at the start of the video, it then drops down about half way through and then again to the standard idle near the end. I can feel the ticking along the fuel rail and line to the first cylinder head. I would think this would be the fuel injectors, but it seems rather loud and pronounced. Should I be getting this into the dealer for a review? I'd hate to leave this and allow it to cause damage if in fact something is going wrong. What are you thoughts. Thanks Richard |

That's just injector tick from what I understand.
There is also a faint knocking noise throughout the vid. That also seems to be a normal noise on n55s. Probably vanos related. |

Thank you for the feedback so far. The noise seemed pronounced yesterday and got me to worrying. I usually am not out of the car while it's running. Yesterday I had to move something in the garage as I pulled in. Perhaps I'm just not used to what the car actually sounds like. I'd welcome other impressions of the ticking. I may have someone take a look at it just to be safe.

your fuel injectors seem a little loud. it could be because of the cold start. do they quiet down a little when the engine is warm? if not, I would look into some sort of fuel cleaner and see if that helps.
someone else mentioned it could also be the top end or VANOS related. how many miles do you have on your current oil? |

The oil was supposedly changed by the dealer in late October or early November - right before my maintenance program expired - maybe 1,000 miles ago. I say supposedly, because when I pull the oil cap and wipe off the residue, it looks pretty dark. but that may be normal.
I'll take another video tonight after my drive home to see if there is a noticeable difference. |

OK - Here is the video from this evening. The ticking has gone down, but the rattle seems to be there. It comes from the right side near the oil cooler and filter housing.
In person at times it sounds like a bearing. What do you all think? Time to get it in for a check-up? |
