WhatCar: G30 5-Series vs W213 E-Class
Hey,
Just thought i'd post WhatCar's comparison between the G30 5er and the new E-Klasse. Considering the 5 Series won their overall car of the year and their luxury car of the year awards, the winner shouldn't come as much of a surprise. In this test they compared the 520d SE and the E220d SE. Check out the written comparison here! Quote:

The Merc has the droopy design language. Just awful except in the C class. (And who wants a C class?)

The Merc is certainly handsome in real life, but next to the 5er it looks droopy/melting. The Bimmer looks more masculine and well-proportioned.

Really? I think the new 5er looks a lot better but the design lines on the Merc do really look sexy, as well as the headlights and rear lights. Seen a few in person and they do look pleasant although a bit too similar to the C Class. Personal preference I guess.

Funny, after going backhand forth for a bit, I chose to order the MB over BMW mostly because of traditional look vs something different. Only worry I have is the MB command center tech sounds to be archaic in comparison to the thought out and extremely intuitive BMW systems I've been used to for so long!

Considering you spend most of your time INSIDE the car, using the technology, I find it an odd choice on those characteristics. I would never settle for MB tech after experiencing BMW iDrive. Even Audi can't hold a candle to what BMW now does in the iDrive.
And since I spend most of my time in the car (not outside of it looking at it), yeah, I kinda value how much effort it takes me to do simple, everyday things... |

Exterior design is not even in the same league. The 5 series crushes. The only e that looks acceptable, design wise is the e63 with the pumped up fenders.
This 5 vs e class debate should be an easy game. Set. Match. But alas it sounds like bmw might have dropped the ball, or perhaps been to conservative (nicer language) with their semi autonomous tech. That will keep the e class in the game or possibly ahead. But this can be fixed if bmw puts more attention here.

biggest thing about 5 vs E is the lack of a non AMG 6 cylinder. if you want more than a 4 banger from merc you have to spend $72k+ which is ridiculous cause the m550i will only be a few thousand more and it fucking crushes that car. mindboggling how they thought that would be a good idea.

I test drove both the G30 520d and the E220d two weeks ago and the 520d handled so much better. The E220d was too soft in the corners and the interior layout with distant screen and the confused touchpad/dial central control didn't work for me. However, the engine seemed more responsive there was a bit of lag on the 520d. With that in mind I've gone for the 530d.
