VRSF Catless Dowpipe: Possible Exhaust Leak
I just installed my VRSF Catless DP on my 2011 N55 E90.
The sound and performance is awesome! I really cant say enough good things about it. Ive put about 300 miles on the install at this point and have hopefully burned any residual oil or debris I may have put from my fingers on the DP itself during the install but I noticed that if I'm stopped and idling the cabin starts to smell like exhaust fumes. Now I realize that the DP is catless and there will be smelly exhaust but Im worried that there might be a leak. Is this normal? I used the provided flange to the exhaust and tightened the C clip on the turbo and DP. I also notice the smell when I'm downshifting and breaking simultaneously. When I'm on the highway or at speed the smell isn't there at all. Thanks in advance! |

I had a leak with the supplied VRSF gasket and bolts that became very noticeable after about 1k miles. After swapping to a larger diameter bolt and the OEM gaskets I don't experience any smell in the cabin at all, hot or cold days, at a stop light or motoring down the road.

The smell is very strong after the install. If your windows are down odds are you will be able to smell it if you are stopped for a little bit. If with windows up you shouldnt smell it at all.

Wow great info guys, thank you all so much! Yes the windows are up and the smell is strong.
Is there a good place to buy the OEM gasket online or should i just go to BMW and pay retail? Also, what bolts should i use? Thanks again! |

I apologize but I cannot recall the bolt diameter used in replacing the included hardware. I found the largest diameter bolt that would fit the existing hole in the original cat-back flange in order to ensure it remained as centered as possible on the DP flange.
Regarding gaskets, I picked mine up from ECS. |

Excellent info, I'll order the gasket and do a quick write up with info for anyone else with this problem.

ouch, smell inside cabin is not normal. I think you do have an exhaust leak.
as for gaskets, you dont have to waste your money on OEM ones. i heard that one from a hardware store (2, 2.1 inch) gasket will work just fine cheers |

You are right, i have read in several threads, people say these cheap ones from autozone work well for 2 bucks a pop. Ill give them a shot before getting the OEM replacement.
Also, here are some specs i found while searching. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...4&postcount=14 Quote:
