Burning too much oil
So i have bought 07 335i and have changed the oil right away. It was with Castrol 5w30 and I've put Repsol 5w30. After the change the motor started working more smoothly but after 1300 km the light for too low oil turned on. All happened in the end of the summer and I was driving the car hard. Blue smoke comes out sometimes out of the exhaust.
Now when the time comes I will put motul 300v power racing 5w40 but my question is until then can I top when needed with the motul oil or I must top it with repsol? Also what could be the reason for so much burned oil? |

how much did you put in when you filled it?
I always put 6.5L/7qrt and check the oil level the next day always reads full. last oil change at 10k km on the oil I dropped about 5 to 5.5L the oil level was 1 notch above the min mark. |

Otherwise the car has zero problems. The water pump was changed recently, not that it was broken but just in case. |

30wt oil is too thin for our cars. The HTHS of those two 5w30's is only 3.0. At our operating temps, viscosity will break down very quickly and leave you unprotected.
I've even had a 40wt oil with HTHS of 3.9 shear after just 1k miles, causing oil temps to shoot beyond limp threshold. I've been using Motul xcess 8100 or Red Line 40wt with HTHS around 4.4. Consumption and temps have been good. If your consumption is that high, it might be a one or more of these : PCV, valve cover, valve cover gasket, turbo seals, valve stem seals, blow-by. Since you're out of warranty, be prepared to spend $10k to $15k+ over the next 1-2yrs to get everything right. Ask me how I know... |

Blue smoke from the exhaust isn't normal. Obviously you're burning oil, and it's probably the turbos, but could be other things like a clogged PCV system. 156000km is considered pretty high mileage for the stock turbos.

I think an injector got bad today... I was told not to drive the car low on fuel but I did it for around 20 km and was even driving it not that hard but not easy for sure. Then I added just a little fuel from a gas station that was nearest to me and the car started smoking when I sopped on red light. So I went to my usual gas station and had 20 liters which released my heavy foot thinking everything is fine now. After around 15 km hard driving the check engine light came on, the car smoked white mainly from the passenger side exhaust, started shaking and the sound from the car was different.
I've smelled the coolant and the oil if they smell like gas and only the oil was smelling so I guess it is an injector. Will see Monday and will make the mechanics see if they can find out why it burns so much oil. And yes, I think 5w30 is tooo thin. |

what is the difference between rotella and helix, both from shell? Ive heard of the e90 track guys using rotella 5w-40 with good results.

No difference in the heavy duty oil, just different names. I'm using T6 on both my cars since 2010. Probably 150k combined miles. Zero issues thus far. I track the BMW too.

Ive been using castrol for most of my vehicles life but i am rather dissapointed with the shearing that this oil causes. I am thinking of going with either Motul or Shell for my next oil change. is Motul 5w-40 a good choice?

yes, 300v then 8100 xcess but is pricy. I know oil is not something you would like to go cheap but between 2 cars and frequent oil changes, no more than 5k or 2-3k when I track, the price difference becomes significant.

you do 2-3K intervals when you track? does the oil become dirty during this intervals? I changed my oil at 5k last time on a particular hard driven street interval and the oil was nasty so i think i understand..

Actually the oil is OK at 2-3k but I just don't want to push it more since I drive the car everyday and I have in storage a lot of T6 that I purchased for $10 per gallon.

I'd say 4000 miles is optimal for your situation. Where do you find such good oil for such a great price? Me and a buddy of mine change our oil by hopping up one front tire on a curb and jacking up the other side - bulk oil would help considering the fact that I tend not to go past 5k miles on an oil change.

would not run 300v or any racing oil without ll01 in a street car. they lack detergents and require super short change intervals.
wouldn't listen to what people say about ignoring the ll01 rating if you're doing short intervals IMO it's still required. if you drive your car hard (track use) redline 5w40 is a group IV/V oil with ll01 rating with really high high temp high shear. it's pretty expensive though. provided your oil has ll01 10k km intervals are ample and probably a little conservative. |
