Wagner Catted DP - Install issues, Rattling and Temp build up.

hello all,

i took my car in this morning to get the down pipe installed. i got a call from the shop saying that they could get it to fit because the header part of the DP was a bit crooked. so they machined it to the right angle to get it to fit. they also had to extend the ? sensor (which is something i read around here on the forums).

so after about 6 hours, it was installed, and i left. slowly i heard this rattling noise coming from the passenger side footwell. it started to grow louder, and now anywhere between 1.000 and 2.500 rpm once i let go pf the gas the rattling starts. as of something is vibrating. im thinking maybe a heat shield or the protective tray under the car... any ideas?

furthermore, i pulled over at the gas station now after doing a strong pull (3rd WOT) and went looking for the rattle and saw that my DP was glowing red (see attached it was redder but the time i got my phone out etc it cooled down a bit) is it suppose to be that hot?

if anyone has amy ideas about the rattling or glowing red DP please let me know!

Hello everybody....

Just got back from the exhaust shop.... solved the rattling. a screw from the midpipe had come loose, tightened it up, and the rattle is gone!

As for the heating up, the shop told me that its not strange for the downpipe to heat up, but considering the conditions (cold weather, only 1 pull, etc), and the fact that it wasnt over an extensive period, it did seem odd. Ive emailed wagner UK to see if this is normal, and see what they say about it.

If in the meantime anyone has experienced something similar, or is willing to make a few pulls and see if theirs heats up red like this, any feedback would be great!

I have an ER Catted downpipe, so slightly different, but while on the Dyno doing pulls my Turbo and downpipe were glowing red.

Glowing exhaust during and shortly after hard running with wide-open-throttle is normal. Exhaust temperatures are extremely high under those conditions. Even normally-aspirated engines experience this - search for videos of engines being tested on a flywheel dyno and you'll see the same thing every time. The harder the engine works, the higher the combustion temperatures.

This is the stuff that keeps me back from aftermarket - factory surely worked it out so their pipe won't light your car afire, and can do this repeatedly for 100Kmiles, but perhaps needing to add some of those 'clunky performance-robbing features' that a clever tuning house can/will undo for a few HP or saving a few bucks. Fine for a track car where you are watching things all the time, but for daily driving it can be unnerving.
