Snow chains or cables?

Have you guys ever had to put snow chains or cables on your Xdrive? We are going to Lake Tahoe next week and the CHP often requires you to carry them just in case.
I have a 2011 328i Xdrive sports wagon with the winter packakge.
Tires on it are the Goodyear Eagle LS2 245/45/17 M+S.

Any input is appreciated.

Go cables. You've probably not enough room on the rears for chains (that's why narrow tires - 225 for instance are preferable.)

Yeah cables are what the auto parts store recommends too. Thanks for the reply!

OP, with AWD and M+S tires, you will not need chains for R1 and R2 chain control. R3 is chains for everyone and they usually close the road before that. While the DOT says you must carry chains for R2, I was never asked. As long as you have good tread on your tires, you should be fine.

Edit: to your original question, no i have never had to install chains on mine, although i do carry them just to be safe.

Garage List
Absolutely suggest dedicated snow tires - not all seasons - for operating in mountain snow country.

I drive the same car as yours, spend time climbing and ski mountaineering in the Cascades. XDrive + snow tires > traction than my Jeep

I'd use snow tires as well, but not sure what CA requires around Lake Tahoe, which can get very bad, from what I am told.

Amazon does sell these cables that will fit an E91:

https://www.amazon.com/Security-Chai...ds=tire+cables

I guess I'd get the snow tires and carry these just in case.

CA requires M+S rated tires. when i lived in the bay area, that was what i used for my "winter" set. Since I moved to reno and frequent the snow a lot more now, i have blizzaks for my winter set. the difference is night and day.
