Wheel balancing weights

Is it me or does the addition of wheel weights appear to be disproportionately heavy compared to the potential imbalance of a wheel & tyre combo?

Surely these things aren't that far out from the factory??

And if the answer is "it's to offset the effect of the valve", then you'd expect them to either right adjacent to it or diametrically opposed which they seem not to be.

Just curious.

Because they're no longer made of lead. There always looks to be way too many nowadays.

It's also to do with where the hole for the valve is drilled out causing an imbalance, but I agree about the placement point, baffles me too.

Yep that makes sense but the weights can be anywhere on the circumference, and different amounts. Plus the valve itself compensates for loss of alloy where the hole is. You're right: baffling.

Come on someone, stop posting pictures of your dreamy mental images of Forum regulars and put your thinking caps on, I need answers!!!
