House speakers/Bluetooth speaker
So we have lots of people around for Christmas and I thought it would be nice if I could play music direct from my phone (library and radio apps) at the flick of a finger from my iPhone. So I was wondering what people are using/recommend? Was looking at a bose Bluetooth speaker as I don't want something massive or too expensive but it has to be good quality and easy to use. I've had a docked system before and didn't really use it as I changed phones and connectors changed (adaptors made it sit awkwardly).

The Bose Soundlink is really good and gives decent sound.
However, have you considered going Sonos? Then getting Apple Music (or similar) provides a great selection of music and if you get say two Play 1's, you can zone them - same tracks or different for other parts of the house. |

Yes the sonos was the other one I was thinking about as I like the fact I can extend it and have it around the house etc.but didn't want to get blinded by brand etc as I know sometimes the best units are names I've never heard of. Orbit sound for example as I really like there sound bar but they don't do extended units for other rooms.

We moved to sonos the other year and it's great.
Love that we can have say Carols playing throughout the house or wife can her her music downstairs and I can play my own upstairs etc. Also I do like Apple Music - went for family subscription , so my daughter also gets benefit in her house. |

Have got Sonos and the Bose Soundlink speaker at/around the home. Both are very good, but for different purposes. Bose is clearly more 'portable' and requires no leads, whereas the Sonos forms more of an overall music 'system' around the house which you can add to over time.
Decide where you are going to use it the most, then that should point to which setup to go for BEWARE....Sonos is addictive, you'll have a multi room set up with Soundbar and wireless bass speaker before you know it Last edited by Beancounter_74; 12-14-2016 at 03:11 AM.. |

Sonos is winning at the moment as it's going in the kitchen mainly but they do an outside speaker too which will be great for the summer. Just got to look at costs to see which is better value as I can see me using both!

I've got a Bose Soundlink Color. For the size of the speaker I'm VERY impressed with the sound that comes out of such a small portable speaker, bass is there in abundance.
I also have a full on soundbar that doesn't do quite so well. Main room is a Bluetooth/Airplay enable AV Amp though, that's a different story altogether - and a lot more costly!! |

+1 for Sonos if you have strong wifi and are going to leave the speakers in one place. Bose Soundlink is Bluetooth based so better if you need portability. Forum law of unnecessary expenditure would suggest you buy both 😆

If you want Airplay, you'd probably be hard pushed to beat this for the price:

This is my solution taking into account that we play music from iPhones, iPad a Macbook Pro or a Windows laptop:
Started with one in the kitchen but now have 3 Airplay speakers around the house. They can all play at the same time from the laptop+iTunes (either my local music or the Apple Music service) - if you have a mac, you can shift any audio really to the speakers. From the iPhone/iPad you can only stream to one speaker at a time - this is not really an issue for us but worth for you to consider. Key is that all speakers and iToys are connected to the same wifi network so the range work better than bluetooth - audio quality is also technically better. The speakers themselves are 2x Philips Fidelio in the bedrooms, in the in the kitchen/dining area I have an Airport Express+ JBL Creature II and in the livingroom, the TV+Soundbar get airplay via a Fire TV stick with this £2 app Was just trying to find a link for you and found this Bowers & Wilkins which might be a good deal for somebody Last edited by x-m4n; 12-14-2016 at 09:19 AM.. |

Thanks for the advice guys, going to invest in a sonos 1 as it's a cheap option and I can expand on the system then. Does anyone know if you can run a radio app through them as all I can find is about live stream but I don't/don't want to pay to stream music, I like having the radio on.

See if they have the twin pack reduced, then ask for discount.
For Radio. TuneIn gives you loads, including the all important Radio 2, 4 and 5. Check out Apple Music and Spotify, you can usually get a free or reduced cost couple months. Both allow you to sort play lists and also Apple Music has radio station. I much prefer Apple for ease of use. The Sonos app for iPad is a doddle to use and makes browsing for music on Apple Music simples |
