2 parts to center cap? Which to order?
I just got some new OEM wheels and was looking to order the center cap. Looking on realoem.com though, it looks like there are 2 parts to this?
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...24&hg=36&fg=15 Parts labeled "4" and "5" both seem to have the BMW roundel. Do I need to buy both? Or do I just need to buy the part labeled "4"? What is "5" for, then? Don't have any experience with this, so hoping someone who does can provide some insight. Thanks! Last edited by dekaliber; 04-06-2008 at 05:26 PM.. |

First off, I think you should ask whichever dealer or store that you're buying the wheels from if they can throw in the center caps for free.
Short of that, the center cap is a single part. It is indeed made up of two pieces (the plastic holder and the thin, roundel, which is made of aluminum or something), but it is sold as a single part. |

I'm planning to get 2 wheels from bmwpartzdirect.com -- I already have 2 and would actually need 4 center caps. That said, you're right, it doesn't hurt to ask if they can throw them in for free.
I realized I mislinked that URL (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...24&hg=36&fg=15)... The realoem picture shows that the center cap is composed of the 2 pieces (4&5) with separate part numbers: 04 HUB CAP WITH CLIPPED-ON PLAQUE 4 36136768640 $4.18 05 BMW INSIGNIA STAMPED/PAINTED 4 36136767547 $4.41 So would I have to get both PNs, or just 4? Sorry for such a newb question... |

I don't know what #5 is, but #4 should be all that you need. I ordered 4 new OEM center caps off of ebay several months ago, and they listed the part number. It was just a single part number, and the caps were an exact replacement for my old caps (one was getting worn out, so I got 4 just in case!).
#4 is what we have on our OEM wheels right now. A plastic hub cap with a clipped-on BMW plaque. I'm not sure what this special BMW stamped/painted piece is. |
