If you want to buy a GoPro to use it with your iDrive, forget it !

If you want to buy a GoPro to use it with your iDrive, forget it because with the new GoPro Capture app (version 3.0.2) for iPhone it no longer work and GoPro has no plan to make it work again.

I wanted to share my experience with all of you because I've bought a GoPro HERO4 Silver to be used exclusively with my M2 iDrive and today I've received to confirmation that it will not work...

Here is the answer my SA got from BMW Canada few minutes ago.

"If the customer is using the up-to-date version of the GoPro app then the functionality is gone. This was a GoPro decision, not a BMW decision."

So if you still have a prior version of the GoPro app and that it is still working with your iDrive consider yourself lucky and never get the current version of the GoPro app because you will lose that fucntionality...

You can download earlier versions, turn off auto update then use it. Google is your friend.

Not in the Apple store, only the current version is available. I tried to find something in Google for app for iPhone but there is nothing. For those using Android there are some sites where they can dowload earlier version of apps but not for iPhones, at least I didn't found any.

Another possible solution would be to buy a used android (any model/brand) for about $50 and just use it for your gopro. You don't need a SIM/data plan to use for the gopro.

For iDrive link, the GoPro app do not work with an android phone, only iPhones.

With an android phone you can connect the GoPro to the phone for sure, using the camera wi-fi, but not the phone to the iDrive to control the camera using the iDrive.

But with the Capture GoPro lastest app version the functionality no longer work with iPhones too.

Here is the chart:

Sorry I'm not sure how to interpret that chart. Does that mean for an iPhone 6 and Hero4, the GoPro Capture app does work with idrive?

Look at my text last sentense. No, it no longer works with the latest version (version 3.0.2.) of the Capture GoPro app.

It is not an Apple corp. decision, it is a GoPro decision to stop the association with BMW for the integration of the GoPro app into the BMW iDrive apps.

so what was the point of the table then? as your last sentence and the table (intuitively interpreted) are in conflict...

this is disappointing that GoPro and BMW are seemingly parting ways. will be interesting to see what software is installed on my car when it shows up in a couple of weeks.

So it appears that the GoPro App was an approved BMW Connected Drive App that worked with iDrive...

https://gopro.com/help/articles/Ques...iDrive-BMW-App

and based on what you are saying they are not including that functionality in the replacement app called Capture.

BTW, Android folks, this is a BMW Connected Drive app compatibility issue not an Apple issue.

One potential solution would be for GoPro to make the Capture app compatible with Apple CarPlay then it would work with all MY2017 cars supporting Apple CarPlay.

The problem that I'm talking about is not the "no preview problem" because those with that problem can see the GoPro icon in the iDrive of their cars, the problem that I'm talking about is when you don't even see the GoPro icon in the iDrive. The problem you are talking about has a solution, the one I'm talking about don't.

Please look at the 6th message of this link https://community.gopro.com/t5/GoPro...ted/td-p/15418

Based on that https://community.gopro.com/t5/GoPro...ted/td-p/15418 look at the 6th message.

I also got this message from BMW Canada "If you are using the up-to-date version of the GoPro app then the functionality is gone. This was a GoPro decision, not a BMW decision."

I understand you. The Android folks didn't. Hence my post.

I know. My issues with Apple run greater that just this (and I say that as a long time Apple user). However one of the suggested work arounds is 'buy an android' so the 'issue' appears to only affect iOS users. So by conclusion if you want the feature don't own an iThing.....

Frankly I don't care who exactly is to blame. I feel miss sold. When I signed an order for my car in October '15 it was off the back of much fan fair and press releases. Much was made of the fact you can use GoPro through your iDrive and as someone who spends a lot of time on the track this weighed high up on my list of reasons to want this car.

How my car has been built (yet to be delivered) I can't back out of the deal.... so I have to take it even if someone changed the features in between. Not cool, not cool.

P.s BMW still push the GoPro app in BMW connected..... so they think it still works

Someone mentioned it above; I think this is being addressed in a revised pending edition of M Laptimer

They (BMW) know that it no longer work with the GoPro Capture last version (3.0.2) but they don't care as it seems to be an interesting feature that may help the sales... You unfortunately discover later, after you have bought an iPhone and a GoPro camera, that it no longer work and that you have bought these gadgets for nothing...

I have used the interface for the go pro app, and it adds very little functionality to the go pro camera use. You can do all the things you need to do on the iPhone as well as view the footage. The link to the car was interesting idea but lacks the basic things you need, you can not change cameras from it, if you idle the camera too long, it shuts down the connection and you can only restore it from the iPhone. So just uninstall the go pro app from the iDrive and forget about it. These kind of interfaces are always quickly conceived of and quickly implemented but rarely done very well. What would kick ass is if we had the ability to write our own apps that work with the iDrive! Open source it.

If you are tracking and recording I assume you are using more than one camera....so the car's interface is not worth the bother. Gopro's are great but it would be nice to have one that has a plug in for power that does not screw with the water seal so you can leave it plugged in while you use it.

Yeah, I'll probably just get a vbox instead for track. Probably a much better investment. https://www.vboxmotorsport.co.uk/index.php/en/
