Winter Tires/Rims (I have no clue)

I don't plan to drive in the snow but it would be great to take it (2016 M4) out on the occasional nice cold day.

What is everyone running during the winter? And, any recommendations where to go?

I run the BMW 18" package. 640M with Conti TS830P. They're great in the cold and light snow. Mine are available as I'm heading south. Interested?

some reasonably priced beyern wheels with pirelli sottozero IIs, good for cold and wet but not the best for snow.

I went with Apex EC-7's with Blizzak LM-32's. Very happy with the setup and got around just fine last winter. Admittedly, last winter was pretty tame...

Pics here if you're interested.

Love those wheels / that style generally. Are those square or staggered? Running spacers or just straight up?

Also would love any info on where to touch / feel / shop locally. BBS has a dealer in Natick (Wheel Dynamix) , but I've never been there.

I'm still trying to get up the curve on all the various winter options. What other reputable wheels are at / below that price point? What about the BBS flow-formed ones? I don't want to get total junk, as these would be on the car for probably 4+ months, but it was tough enough getting signoff for the car, so I don't have a huge budget for wheels....

Square setup, 18x9.5". No spacers, that's just the offset for those wheels (ET22).

Not sure what's available locally. I know Turner has a few on display, but definitely very few options there.

BBS and Apex seem to be two of the most popular when you're looking for reasonably priced, good quality, decent looks. For a bit less money, there's some options at Tire Rack too.

If you haven't already done it, check with some of the forum vendors (European Auto Source or Tag Motorsports jump to mind). They typically have decent discounts for forum members.

You said no snow? Just dry cold clear days, occasionally, and you have another car to use, so you are never forced to drive the M3? I would not change from stock (be careful, they don't have much grip in the cold), if you plan on driving the the snow, even a dusting, and I mean ANY snow, then for sure get winter tires.

Thanks scott13. I just 'registered interest' in the upcoming Apex EC-7 group buy, but their recommended F80 M3 square option was 18x9, so I went with that. I'll see if I can change that to 18x9.5. What size Blizzak LM-32 do you run on that 9.5" wide rim?

The BBS SR seem to only come 18x8 for the F80, based on my limited search-fu. I haven't confirmed the ETs for the BBS, but I also am thinking those might need spacers. If that's the case, then I'd probably go with the EC-7 or something else a bit wider, as I'd be expecting more overall mileage on cold, clear / plowed roads (as opposed to anything worse).

Interestingly, TireRack's website seems to think that the 18" BBS SR is not an available fitment for the 2015 F80 M3 with regular brakes. Perhaps a problem with their configurator....

Also looking at the VMR 710 and 721s in their Gunmetal finish, although those are 19s.

Don't like the TireRack Rials or whatever - 'For a few dollars more' I'd rather have something that looks 'better' to my eye.

Turner didn't seem to have much in the ~$1k (for 4 wheels) price range. Will ping EAS and Tag tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the help.

Same here. I just keep the stock setup and if its dry then I drive it. Used it a lot last year without any issues (obviously was an exceptionally dry winter).

I went with the 255/40R18's all around. The 9" are perfectly fine for that tire size. I got the 9.5" so I could squeeze up to a 275 on for track days. In retrospect, I probably should have just bit the bullet and got an extra set of wider rears specifically for track. Meh. Live and learn...

Not sure about break clearance for the BBS's, but I think 18x8 will put you more in the ~255mm tire width if that matters to you.

Also wasn't a big fan of the Rials. Nothing wrong with them, but as you said, for a bit more money, some more interesting options open up. Just for the sake of throwing out more options, I think Beyern Mesh also has some options in the ~$1k (set of 4) price range. No experience with them though. Just know they have some cool looking designs.

Thanks again. Was able to change my "indication of interest" to 18x9.5, but a few hours after that the entire Apex EC-7 group buy was cancelled due to lack of sufficient interest. They have a group buy going on now for their new (more expensive) designs, but nothing for the regular EC-7s. So, back to retail pricing for that option.

Was quoted 19" VMRs but with LM001 tires - now have to research how these stack up vs LM-32.

Will research Beyern Mesh wheels now.

Doh. Sorry man. That sucks. Is the group buy through EAS? If not, might be worth checking with them anyway. I didn't get mine as part of a group buy and they were still discounted from list price.

The group buys (at http://www.groupbuyparts.com) were direct with Apex, I think.

I've been in contact with Kevin at EAS, but they (and Apex) are out of Anthracite 18x9 EC-7s for now. So, wait & get new some time at/after mid-December, or try to find used for sale somewhere, or revert to 18x8 BBS SRs.

Decisions, decisions.... I think with this kind of financial outlay, they (the wheels) shouldn't be a compromise (size or finish) just to save a few dollars.

Whatever you do, don't get performance snow tires. Might as well get all seasons.

I had performance snow tires (dunlop 3ds 235/255) and the rear-end still kicked out. Tires performed great in slush though.

Stick to Blizzak or another snow/ice tire that is truly rated for deep snow and ice (to be on the safe side).

Thanks. It seems that there are a number of different "Blizzaks" - LM32 (now discontinued), LM001 (replaced the LM32, I think), the WS80 (full studless ice/snow tire), perhaps others. TireRack and others refer to the winter tires as either "performance winter/snow" or "studless ice/snow" (not considering "stud-able ice/snow"). Perhaps wishful thinking, but I'm hoping/expecting that we will continue to have milder winters, so I'm thinking dry/clear road performance will be more important than snow carving. Absent another 2014-2015 record snow winter, I'm thinking I'll be OK with "performance winter" tires, such as the LM001, Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4, Pirelli Sottozero, etc. If it gets really bad, I can just mooch off rides in the wife's GL450.

I have shopped all around and looked at a bunch of aftermarket brand wheels. It's now down to: Apex EC-7s in 19x9.5 square ET22 vs. buying a used/take-off set of OEM 18" 513M wheels (18x9 and 18x10). Both are "pretty", and look "right" on the car. The Apex's (new, without a deal) will run $1276 at list price (+ shipping), versus $1400-1600+ for a set of 513Ms (can pick up, so no shipping cost). It seems like the Apex's will hold their value, judging by what I've seen on the forums, so that's probably a push. I suspect the 513Ms are "stronger" (full forged vs. flow formed), but I'm leery of running a 10" wide rear on a winter setup that may see 'some' snow or ice on the ground, at some point.

Maybe the right strategy is to just wait for black Friday and hope for a non-group buy discount on the Apex's?

Any reason to choose 19" apex vs. 18"? 18s are definitely better in the snow, can put a bigger sidewall on those rims. Buddy of mine has the 18s and they still looks really good on the car.

Might be a little cheaper too, and they're lighter

The reason for 19 vs 18 (Apex EC-7) is that the 18s are out of stock (in anthracite). However, I've since scored a set of 18" OEM 513Ms (18x9 and 18x10), so now seeking winter performance tires to fit.

I think the choices are 255/40-18 square, or perhaps 255/40-18 up front and 265/40-18 in the rear. However, it looks like there are only a few winter performance choices in 255, and perhaps nothing in 265/40. Any suggestions?
