Got the yellow Engine Overheat indicator on the highway (normal driving, 50 degree weather) which promptly turned red and killed my engine power. Pulled over, turned it off and once i restarted it let me make it all the way home (45 min). Got back and uninstalled my Cobb and read the codes. Just one related to timing (issue for another day).

Figured i'd be good to go for my drive back from the Packers Bears game at 12AM that night now that the tune was uninstalled but the same thing happened again in 25 minute increments.

Oil temp was normal between 230-250. Did some research and this kind of stuff seemed to happen a lot on the N54s and was attributed to either shit water pump or thermostat. Figured our cars had this figured out by now.

What do you guys think??

Next question...is it completely suspicious if I specifically tell the stealership NOT to do any software upgrades to my DME lol. Have 98G1B now and would HATE to get upgraded to whatever new crap thats out now that takes away compatibility with upcoming MHD and my current Cobb.

A similar thing happened to me on Tuesday.

I had just merged on to the interstate when I suddenly lost power. I had to absolutely floor it to accelerate enough to change lanes to get on the shoulder. Right after the loss of power, it gave me the same overheating warning. I had it towed to the dealership and I went by a few hours later to see if I could pull some codes. (nope)

I find it funny that it could have "overheated" in less than five minutes of driving, which leads me to think it's a thermostat issue, especially because at the dealership I started it up and the radiator fan went into full blast immediately, even though the engine was completely cold. Then again, thermostat and water pump problems tend to run hand in hand...

Think we have the same issue. My fan starts blowing full blast in like 15 second intervals even when cold.

Exact same thing happened to me when my water pump went out! I had to uninstall my COBB on the tow truck to the dealer, though my car would let me drive 20 minutes or so before it flashed yellow. Took it to the shop and they couldn't find any codes bc of when I removed the COBB, and they could recreate the issue. My shop thought it was just engine overheat from track racing (car is FBO with suspension mods) so they initially put up a fuss, but then they replaced it under warranty.

Mine is currently in the shop now. I'm at 60k.

I got a....drive moderate to cool engine down......error or something along those lines. Stopped for 15 min and everything was peachy for the 5mi drive home. Temps seem to rise a little at idle but stayed slightly above normal while driving. Noticed my throttle was sporadically dropping out prior to this. Thought it was a jb4 thing. Turns out after reading the DME that there is higher voltage coming from the pump. Internal leakage is happening causing slight shortage in the water pumps electrical connection. I'm hoping this is what is causing my throttle issue. Also received a low battery warning after getting back home. Electrical issues like this are indicators of my water pump issue so we'll see Friday when I pick the car up. I was also getting the fan coming on full blast. The water pump leaking internally can cause a lot of weird erroneous electrical issues.

Same thing happened to my 2012 N55 on Sunday. Only had 42K miles on it. Gonna take the car to dealer right after thanksgiving. Am I gonna able to drive it there in the morning? About 20 miles, 60 degrees.

Really depends, check your coolant, if it is really low, top it off and drive without the heat/ac on. My pump is on its way out currently, its moody with the fan, my coolant was completely low. I topped it off yesterday and should be replaced the water pump and thermostat on sunday.

Do you have CPO? If so just get a free tow to your dealer shouldnt be driving on it if its what happened to me. You will never know how hot your car really is cuz all you'll see is oil temp. Just play it safe its not worth saving a half hour of convenience.

Thanks guys. Just got the water pump and thermostat replaced under CPO warranty at McKenna, Charlie helped me through the whole process and hooked me up with the loaner too.
