reliability of aftermarket turbos
Alright guys, I'm at the point where I'm thinking about putting new turbos on (wastegate rattle, and 100k on the car), or just trading the car in. I'm fbo, and don't want to make much more power than stock, so I've been looking at stock/ cheaper than stock options for replacement, ie vargas stock rebuilds, tubolabs stock rebuilds etc. I like these options for thier upgraded wastegates, but I worry about the longevity of the internals, after reading a lot of threads about aftermarket balanced turbos not lasting long. I put 15k on my car a year, so I don't wanna be going through turbos 18 months from now again. Anyone running replacement stock internal turbos through an aftermarket manufacturer with success??

Funny enough, I bought the Turbo Lab wastegate rattle repair kits and the turbo rebuild kits and I'm rebuilding my OEMs as we speak. I marked the wheels and shaft so that upon reassembly, I'd (in theory) maintain the balance of the turbos.
Are there really a lot of aftermarket turbos that are failing due to poor balancing?

Ecs has a kit with oem Mitsubishi turbos and install kit for 1500. Not a bad deal if your staying stock.

No, but for the money and amount of work, I'd rather put that towards a down payment of a newer car almost, I've been wanting one of the 11-14 5.0 Stang's and it's a good excuse 😂 $1500 with install kit is good though, I thought it was $1500 for OEMS alone, plus the kit. I also like the idea of beefed up wastegates vs the stock ones, and the lower price was just a bonus

My turbos were just burnt from 130,000 and the waste gates were chattery. The stock turbos are Mitsubishi made. Many other cars use the same turbos and as a result there are many billet one piece turbine units available for rebuild. The purpose of a one piece CNC'd turbine is to maintain balance longer than the stock multi piece turbine. If you are looking for a minor upgrade in boost with longevity in mind I'd stay stock and seek a billet one piece turbine. The stock turbos are small to avoid lag. Upgrading the software will release unlocked potential in these little bastards. Stealer ship wanted 7g's to replace turbos. I removed the turbos myself and gave them to a local shop in Van Nuys for the rebuild and VSR balance. 7g's was actually $1,200 when I did it myself. Not the easiest thing to do on jack stands but where there's a will there's a way. I put another 45,000 on the car before getting my M3. No balance issues or smoke.

I was at this crossing few months ago and the path I chose was to go with replacement from BMW and then going to have a a shop make a better bushing for the wastegate flapper area so it doesn't wear that easily thus causing a rattle.

MMP stage 3 turbos have been out there and running flawlessly for a couple months. I had the one recall early on the first batch to strengthen the weld of the oil inlet nut, but no running issues on any of the cars running my turbos since then. So far 25 sets sold and delivered, have 30 more in production currently , ready by end of this month.

I've considered that as well, just throwing a WG fix from turbolab on a set of new OEMS. I would do it on my current ones, but for all that work, if the center sections go soon, I'd be ripping them right back out.

Contact Majestic Turbo in Waco, Texas. They have rebuilt many turbos for me and I have never had an issue. They will rebuild and balance them.

Edit: ill say this. I dont believe some of these turbos are that fragile, i really dont. Ill just say no matter what you choose just dont try to max things out or even try to be aggressive. Mine made 2 pulls during logs at 23psi and kaboom.. Get them and stay in the safe 20psi range. Dont go getting caught up in the glory runs most people post. Thats my take Last edited by Grand_hustle17; 09-13-2016 at 04:09 PM.. |
