Anyone in Phoenix, AZ to benchmark with?

I'm a newbie owner of a 2009 335D, and I want to know how fast a healthy, stock D should be.

I suspect mine has some carbon buildup because my uncalibrated butt-dyno says it's missing 50 hp at least. A 3600 lb car with 265 whp should accelerate a LOT faster than my old 3050 lb car with 136 whp car did.

I realize I could always quantify with 3 runs on a dyno, but this way would be cheaper just as a 'sanity check'.

So, anyone up for it? PM details if interested.

Not sure what you are looking for to satisfy your comparison curiosity. I have a 2011 stock D with 60,000 miles, also with expected carbon build up. But my symptoms are mostly decreased mileage. I expect the performance has also declined, but since it comes on so gradually and the performance is rather good compared to everybody else on the road, it's hard to notice.

With no JBD installed, it still goes quite well. How's that for vague?
With the JBD set at 100%, it goes even better, particularly at speeds above 60 mph.
It will pull easily to 100 mph, even up a hill.

I have been told by at least one indy that owners do notice a difference after they get the carbon cleaning.

230 hp at wheels is more the going rate for an un modified M57. This is what the tuners show as a starting point anyway.

I get your point as should still be a disparity.

It just feels weak for 230 whp to me for the weight. Should be 16.6 lb/hp.

My old Jetta Tdi with stage 1.5 chip and Bosio PP764 nozzles made ~135 whp. At 3050 lbs, that's 22.6 lbs/hp.

Acceleration of the D should feel about 26% faster--totally obvious by butt-dyno.

It doesn't.

So I'd like to compare to a stock D with relatively recent CBU cleaning or a known CBU-free intake to check.

It should feel much faster.

I remember test driving my stock d and it felt "fast" and performed decently enough. The first test we did was against an older 300hp cobra with bolt ons; the diesel won by several lengths bone stock.

Ideally stock you should be averaging 36-37+ on the hwy. Substantially less you may have some issues.

Okay, I've had a change of venue with the car:

History:

I just bought this car last month in Phoenix. I'm working in MS, so hadn't been able to drive it myself until last weekend (wife had parked and stored it until I came home). We hadn't planned on my bringing it out to MS, but my other car died, so I drove it out here.

On the trip out here, the car performed seemingly pretty well. 1544 miles, averaging 83 mph (hours on end at 101 mph) yielded 29.8 mpg, which seems well in line with expectations given my high rate of speed. Also, I took it to a dash up to 145 mph and it was still pulling quite strong. Probably would top out just over 150 mph.

But once I got it to the MS Delta, I started doing some test driving, suspecting week low end torque:

From reading around threads here, I'd thought my small turbo wasn't spooling because when I ran Torque Pro, it was showing boost < 5 psi under 2500 RPM's. Also, the car's shift behavior was such that it either ran < 2200 rpm's or > 2700 rpm's. It never operated in the mid-range (I think I know why now--must have been due to DDE adaptations learning from prior driver).

So last week, I went for highway drives and forced the car to accelerate in Manual-Sport mode through 2000-3500 RPM range. Last night, the car kept going into limp mode right at 2500 RPM's. The car would say "Engine malfunction: car is in reduced power. See BMW service," and would then operate with 0.0 psi boost for about 2-5 minutes. The limp mode would self-clear and boost/power would restore.

However, I was able by accelerating from 1400-2400 RPM's to get the small turbo to make 10-11 psi by exercising it (I'm dying to do a true Italian tune-up, but don't have any steep roads around in the MS Delta.)

FAULT CODES POSTED BY TORQUE PRO are:

P0299 High pressure turbocharger underboost
P0403 EGR
P2457 EGR

End of report.

So this would explain the low power (small turbo underboosting, so car simply shifts up to higher rpm, making large, slow spooling turbo do all the work.) I don't think either turbo is seized. The small turbo WILL make boost when forced to.

Question 1: 2500 RPM's is the switchover point from small to large turbo, right?

Question 1: what is the most likely culprit? Vacuum leak/s, faulty changeover valve, more?

Question 2: what is the valve/s or actuators most likely at suspect?

Update on last post: I followed Yozh's guide on testing and changing vacuum lines and found 2 leaking vacuum hoses at the multi-T fitting. Replaced most of the vacuum lines and the limp mode at 2500 rpm's is gone. Still have EGR and MID faults, but going to do further testing today.

Yozh's thread called Turbo Control, Vacuum System, Pressure Converters etc. is great for anyone suspecting vacuum related issues. In that thread you will also find links for part numbers and easy to understand diagrams for common seals and such (post #15 in that thread by Wrecker335d). The website www.realoem.com is invaluable for finding our parts quickly.

My job posting here in MS will end in a few weeks, and I'd still like to benchmark with someone in Phoenix just to know what the acceleration curve, ride and handling should feel like.

Where in Mississippi are you located? If you're along the Gulf Coast, I work out of Slidell.

I'm out of Cleveland. Want to meet up somewhere the weekend of the 22nd/23rd? I could visit the coast. Been meaning to anyway, and this just gives me an excuse
