Mild Exhaust
The exhaust on my 228i is anemic. I want to upgrade the exhaust but do not want a loud exhaust. Something with a nice tone. I don't care about hp gain. I considered Super Sprint but they do not stock any for a 228i Mpackage as the rear valance has to be cut. I had a mild Magna Flow on my Jeep that I liked. I also want black tips.

Have you considered catted downpipe instead of exhaust?

downpipe is the pipe before the midpipe ... By replacing downpipe you get power and sound vs sound only with midpipe

Mike beat me to the punch. That's what I'd recommend as well.

Dinan also just came out with a resonator delete, $400 installed. Maybe worth a look.

I'd be weary of anything except for the M Performance Exhaust. Non OEM parts void the warranty for anything they can cause damage to / affect, and downpipes increase boost pressure if I understand correctly, so if there was damage to your engine, BMW could refuse to warranty it.

That being said, it is always best to check with your dealership before committing to any mod (unless you plan on removing it before your visit)

MP Exhaust is pretty tame on it's own. Not sure how it would sound on the 4 banger, but if it's anything like mine, it's got a great tone and sound without any drone or sound vibes in the car. I would compare it to the sound level of the 350z in terms of how noticeable it is from the outside of the car. I get compliments on it often, but it's still a bit too tame for my liking. I'll be adding a catless DP to mine, for both power and more sound. If that's not enough, I'll opt for the res delete.
I would do that catted DP mod, for power and a bit more grunt. We have a 3" catted DP on our GTI, which is essentially a 2.0T 16v DI engine like the BMW, and it sounds pretty nasty (good nasty) through the stock muffler suitcase out back. Pops and crackles a little, and increased the tone, but still retains a stock+ volume.

Catted downpipe would be my suggestion as well.

If you do the catted or catless DP, you're going to get a Check Engine Light and the exhaust will stink (less so with catted DP). Your dealership might deny some warranty claims due to the replacement of the primary catalyst with non-OEM. Muffler or catback exhaust shouldn't raise any issues. I'd keep looking for a better exhaust or have one made using a Flowmaster muffler or something similar.

Rayscott I just did a custom muffler set up i think you'll like. Im on the exact same boat as you. want a bit more tone, thats about it. I got the shop to follow the stock setup but replaced the stock muffler with a Vibrant ultra quiet resonator. Sounds real good. deep growl and gurgles and pops when you let off the gas but not to the point where you get unwanted attention. Good quality pipes bends n welds, and a cheaper alternative.

My Dinan catback exhaust sounds very beefy without being obnoxious and raises the fewest possible red flags for service/warranty purposes. I'd be careful about these more radical suggestions if all you want is a less anemic exhaust tone. For some of us (not all, by any means) life is too short for warning lights, unpleasant smells, problems with the service department and/or breaching emissions regs if they apply in your state.
