DEF fluid change

2014 328d xdrive in Toronto. 92000k

No start in 800km. I'd really prefer not to pay $400 to the stealership when the DEF fluid itself is so cheap. Can I do it myself and if so, will I be in trouble when I return the car at lease end?

If you are leasing the car, why do you want to pay for any maintenance out of your own pocket?

Huh? Who's going to pay for it? I'm out of warranty. I don't "want" to pay.

DIY is easy. You should be able to dump an entire 2.5gallon jug into the port inside the gas door. If it starts backing up, stop and wait until after you drive it a bit; the transfer pump will move it to the active tank. You don't have to reset anything on the computer.

If you want to be a bit more careful of spillage, buy one of the screw-in ones (VW/Audi sell 2 liter ones fairly cheap), then read the DIY's on how to re-use them. Check the e90post diesel sub-forum for DIY.

Dealers and other shops have to treat it as hazardous, is why their cost is so much.

that's definitely helpful! does doing this create any issues for maintenance on the leased vehicle? I don't want headaches in 12 months when I return it.

All DEF fluid is the same, there's an ISO standard for it.
BMW had to design the system to be flexible with the usage; different people's driving regimes use DEF at different rates. The dealer won't find out and won't care.

Link doesn't really work. But I've never seen any DEF but the correct one.
