Long Island Expressway Crash

On the island today, there was an accident on the LIE involving a 3 series. Just hope they're okay. It's hard to tell but it seems that all 4 in the subaru and one in honda were killed, and one in the honda and the bmw driver+ 3 passengers have survived. Its interesting to see how the BMW held up.

An out of control subaru jumped the median and collided with 2 oncoming cars, a honda and bmw.

The driver of BMW, 73-year-old Marvin Tenzer and three other passengers, all of Westhampton, were also hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.

Sad event. Looks like the BMW held up very well after a severe frontal hit. Did it's job.

The guy in the Subaru was travelling at a very high rate of speed to cause that much damage. There are also 2 very large bumps on the road just prior to the wreck that have been there for months. Drove passed that section of road twice today. A proper barrier would have prevented the Subaru from entering WB lanes. The state cheaped out and instead installed metal cable guide wire type catch fences which don't elevate to a normal Jersey type barrier height. This isn't the first time a car has crossed over these cable guard barriers on the 495.

The issue with these type of highway cable guard barrier systems is that they require constant maintenance. Even a small impact from a vehicle requires intervention.
And although they were proposed as being a more cost effective solution than standard concrete barriers, the long term cost of maintaining them will undoubtedly be much higher. But it keeps the road crews busy, I guess.

That's a terrible tragedy. Sounds like a combination of possibly speeding plus an unsafe road with the speed bumps and metal plate that locals were aware of, but maybe this driver wasn't.

The BMW surviving is just luck of the draw I think. Looks like it was hit head-on, which is the safest possible way to have an accident. Sometimes a couple seconds in either direction would've been disaster and when you get lucky you just give thanks and hug your loved ones.

According to another news report, one passenger in the BMW (81 yrs old) died. His wife survived. So no, the BMW did not fare better, and as chiefneil said, it was probably just luck of the draw that it got hit as it did.

Just read that, sucks, thought they would make it cause the reports said non life threatening injuries. I wonder if it had to do with their age and stress.

it's a free-for-all on the LIE. It's just nuts. A close friend of mine was nearly killed last year when someone smashed into her Jeep while it was stopped in traffic by trying to go around in the HOV lanes. Her rear bumper (jeep patriot) was just behind her drivers seat!
The further east you go the crazier people drive too. Very dangerous road because of these drivers. So sad for all involved.

been following this story since it happened a few days ago. sad to see that innocent lives were lost because of "reckless" driving. especially the 10 year old boy on the way to his own birthday party.

i just read on one of the articles that the family of the man that caused the accident has set up a gofundme campaign to solicit donations for the funerals. not sure how i feel about that one.... cause i think about all of the innocent people that lost their lives because of one man's actions.

The BMW held up pretty well. But at that speed death is almost guaranteed. A combined speed of like 160-170mph is more then any car, no matter how safe, can handle.

I know he was speeding, but it was still an accident. I'm sure we've all got up to 90mph at one point or another in our cars. If something unexpected happens at those speeds it only takes a moment to lose control.

totally agree. which is why i referred to it as "reckless" theres no way of proving he was driving recklessly (swerving.. cutting in and out.. etc) aside from the high rate of speed at which he was traveling.

i have been guilty of driving at speeds of anywhere between 80-90MPH but its usually for very short spurts and i make sure i have plenty of room to stop/slow down without causing any incidents. this is mainly due to a stupid road rage incident of mine over 10 years ago...learned my lesson from that one.

praying for all the victims and their families

An accident is when something happens that's beyond your control. Driving too fast is within your control.
According to the latest reports he may have been doing close to 100 MPH, and probably went out of control when he couldn't avoid the traffic in front of him that had slowed down in the construction zone.

It's your organs that take on the impact. They can "turn to mush" from the impact regardless of how well the car holds up.

It's like shooting someone who's wearing kevlar hard plates with a high-caliber round. The plates will absorb the bullet, but the transferred kinetic force pulps your innards.

The plates are steel or ceramic, the garment that holds them is kevlar. A vest takes the force of the bullet and spreads it from a very small area to a large area, minimizing the damage. An otherwise fatal shot can be limited to a broken rib or two. Ask me how I know.
Sudden deceleration causes all your internals to bash against each other, causing massive damage and internal bleeding, even peritonitus if membranes fail. Concussion and brain damage is pretty much guaranteed. It's bad enough with two football players who may collide at a combined speed of 30MPH, and they've got headgear. It's sudden deceleration that makes most plane crashes fatal, even if there's no fire. It's what took Dale Earnhartd Sr. too, in his case snapping his neck.
