F32 dash rattle marble rolling noise

One day after picking up my 2014 428i I notice a noise that seems to occur at accelerarion, right after braking or if you swerve back and forth like a slalom. Car has 35k on it and appears perfect otherwise.

It sounds like you had a marble or a hard little ball rolling back and forth in a compartment which I do not.

It seems to change a bit depending on where I have vents blowing but I can't be certain. My best guess it seems to be coming from area of say behind steering wheel. And every now and again like 15 percent of the time it's not there. The worst kind of noise to hunt down!

It's a CPO and goes back to dealer next week. If they can't solve easily I will raise hell but was hoping for ideas from people here.

Imagine you came to a stop and a tiny little marble oscillates and rolled back and forth like a pendulum for a second. Or same thing right when you accelerate and turn in to a turn. Or you zigzag zagged back and forth and it did it.

I cannot feel anything, all sound.

That sounds awful.

Ihad a rattle like that in one of my old E92s. It drove me insane. After a few weeks trying to figure out exactly where it was coming from I pulled my sun visor down quicker than normal and I heard that sound! It turned out that one of the ball bearings in the mirror sliding cover came loose and was rolling inside the hollow visor.

I hope you find your fix sooner rather than later!

I've got a similar thing, but it's coming from behind the driver's seat. I took the chair out, lifted the carpets, took the vent duct and sub out, but still can't find anything. Starting to think it could be in the seat itself.

That's the worst part is think it's dash but sometimes yes I am not sure other times. Not looking forward to the dealer tearing it all apart. I really like the car so won't try to get bmw to take it back quite yet. Not even sure I could. Wish I had heard it on test drive. I'll let them give it an honest try.

The F-chassis cars now have a "network" (as opposed to a "bus") that ties all the control units together. It may be a token-ring network and the token may have fallen out and is now rolling around somewhere in the dash.

And that would not affect functions at all? Rolling in dash is correct sound. I don't hear it over bumps, takes inertia in some direction, forward stop turn etc.

Pic of this token?

Classic. Decided to take to dealer this morning and no noise. I can't duplicate it for trying. Did it all weekend and now gone. Of course nothing anyone can do at moment.

In other news, I love this car. It is so choice to quote Ferris Bueller.

Are you still having the problem? I have something similar...when I am making a sharp turn at speed (and most often when there is a significant grade up or down) I hear what sounds like 4 or 5 marbles/ball bearings sliding across something than hitting each other and stopping. To me it sounds as though it is coming from behind the knee kick panel for the driver. Impossible to look around for it as it only happens while driving.

I know this was a while ago, but was this ever diagnosed? I'm having the exact same issue and I can't seem to find anyone who has posted about such an issue apart from here. I pulled the drivers side air vent off and looked inside the dash where the steering column is and its nothing inside there its coming from further within the car...
