My 2008 M3 Needed Service At 653 Miles!

Hey guys, I just had my M3 serviced to day at 653 miles. I wouldn't say I've been driving the hell out of it by any means, but I also have not been too conservative either. I think I hit 6k rpm a few times, but that's it. This was the service that was supposed to happen at 1200 miles! The tech said I should have nothing to worry about, but I'd still like some outside opinion. Should I be worried? Comment/suggestions? Thanks. Much appreciated.

I don't think we know enough. Why did you take it in for service? Did it have a fault code?

Dude, why did you take it in at 653? A fault code come up? did you get a check engine light? Random misfire?

No, nothing came up at all. No check engine light or anything. I got a call from my dealer saying that my car had sent them a message telling them that it needed to be serviced! ???

What???? Why would it send them a message but not tell you anything inside the car. That makes no sense.

That's what I was thinking as well, and I asked that same question! I didn't know what to think, so I brought her in like they suggested.

Thats strange, it should be 1,200

but i think the part where our cars can "call" the dealer and tell them it needs service is funny. lol

I wonder if they needed to offer a prospective buyer a test drive of a BMW M3?

The service interval really depends on how the car has been driven.

Thanks for the reply. In other words, I've been driving it a bit too hard. Would you suggest easing up a bit until I hit 1200?

G-Known - sorry about the comment - I don't know. I am sure the car is smart enough to phone home if it needs some milk and cookies. I'd be curious to find out if other M3 drivers are getting called home early as well?

Thanks, Kev. I just hope I haven't damaged the engine in any way. The tech at the dealer said I shouldn't worry.....but still.....I worry.

Na- don't worry. You have a 4 year, 50k warranty. BMW claims to cover it all from brake pads, to oil change, to everything.

So if you break the engine- they fix it. I think I have gone slightly north of 5.5k twice now - but I have been 1/4 - 1/2 throttle the whole way.

I am sure that what happened was the oil sensor or something just detected that it needed changing sooner that later and phoned home thus preventing any major problems.

Thanks for the input. I'm sure you're probably right. I think my best bet is to go a bit easier on her until I do hit 1200 like the tech suggested.

I will make that call to see why it called for a service so soon. Maybe they have some more info.

On the other hand, there are still some out there that don't believe in the BMW break-in system. I think it's best to do what BMW say, but who knows. I'm sure she'll be ok.

Probably not a bad idea

I would also look at i-Drive. Specifically in the info sources area.

Check out the oil level, and recommended service for the other areas of the car as well

If there was really something wrong with the car you would be alerted everytime you drove the car

Maybe certain fluid levels have gone below spec from aggressive driving and whistled itself in to the dealer? Who knows...?

For what it's worth, a few years ago, I got a call from my dealer's service department that my 2006 M5 needed to have brake service at only 4k miles and 2 months of ownership. Apparently, I wore my front brake pads enough during 2 days of lapping at the track and the car sent a message via BMW Assist (telematics) to the dealer alerting them that I needed brake service. The dealer called me before I even knew what was going on and said I probably needed new pads and maybe rotors and that they would order them in advance since it was such a new model that they didn't stock them. I brought the car in and they swapped the rotors and pads on BMW's expense no questions asked. I was amazed at how that all transpired... and a bit freaked out that the dealer knew what I was doing on my weekends with the car

When I get my M3, I'm going to find some way to take that BMW Assist offline. I'd like to change my own brake pads thank you and so I'll save my "freebie" rotors courtesy of BMW Ultimate Service when I actually need new rotors (after about 2-3 sets of race pads).

G-Known, my car indicated that it needed it's first service at just over 800 Kms (or 500 miles). This is because my car was the BMW show car and it had been repeatedly started and stopped BEFORE I bought the car. This did not allow the engine to get-up to proper operating temperature, which would result in more wear on the engine while it was brand new.

I did not push my car hard at all while I was running-it in. Do you take frequent, short trips? Could be a similar situation as mine. Either way, assuming there's no foul-play on the dealer's part, you should not have anything to worry about. Just avoid using the car if you're only gonna drive it 2 mins up the road and park it there all day!

I will post status of my car periodically. By doing that, I hope to help out future M owners when it comes to the break-in process.
