Why 666M on GTS?

Wondering why BMW would put the 666M wheel on the GTS, rather than choose a lightweight wheel that would reduce unsprung weight significantly

The GTS wheels are not the same as the CP wheels. GTS has 19in front, 20in rear.

Maybe they're lighter too?

Weight measurements above are for 19" front 20" rear. Happy to be proven wrong that the GTS wheels are somehow different, apart from the paint of course

IND weighed the standard CP 666M wheels which are 20" front and rear.

I'd thought they'd have offered lighter wheels too. This is what the GTS technical training manual says:

"As standard, forged 19” M light-alloy wheels are used at the front and 20” M light-alloy wheels at the rear in 666M styling."

I guess this is why they offer the carbon wheels as a way to reduce weight

Garage List
A few data points on dimensions and weights:
  • GTS 681M - 19X9.5 20.4lb / 20X10.5 24.2lb
  • GTS 666M - 19X9.5 24.0lb / 20X10.5 28.4lb
  • ZCP 666M - 20X9.0 25.3lb / 20X10.0 27.1lb
  • STD 437M - 19X9.0 22.9lb / 19X10.0 24.2lb

When you consider that the front GTS wheel is 0.5 wider than the 437M, the 1.1lb weight penalty is not that bad. Maybe they made the 666M very sturdy.

But I still find the 666M wheels quite heavy compared to the 437M though. I had much higher expectation when BMW advertised the 666M to be "weight optimized" .

Totally agree. Don't know why BMW didn't opt for the sort of lightweight wheels Porsche fit on their GT3/GT3 RS.

BBS FI-R weigh in at 16.5lbs front, 18.5lbs rear with M4 GTS spec.

Weight-saving for all 4 wheels is 34.8lbs (15.8kg)!!!

The point I was making is that BMW are not fitting lightweight wheels as standard. Carbon compound wheels are an option at a considerable price

~20.7lb front
~24.0lb rear

The weight you quoted seem to be for CP 666M (they are very close to the ETK quoted weights). It is important to note that beyond the fact that the front GTS wheel is a 19", the GTS front and rear wheels are also 0.5" wider than the CP, which increases their weight.

That is just ridiculous. 20.7/24 lbs?? Get outta hear with that malarkey.

Didn't the GTS do the 2nd fastest time around the Nurburgring on these wheels?

2nd to what ?

The point is that the weight of the 666M wheels is not a big contributor to the M4 GTS' good performance.

Tbh, i just switched my 666m to the 437m wheels and i don't know for some reason my car felt slower. i don't know if it was the tires or whatever reason, maybe psychological, but i felt like my car doesn't feel the same. lol. maybe i'm just getting used to the 19s.

I think they wanted a really stiff and sturdy wheel seeing probable track use?

Porsche 991 gt3 wheels are also 24-28 lb front-rear...

The 666m's probably felt faster to you because it took you longer to slow down..
