Oil Change Distance

Hello Everyone!

About a month ago I bought a used '13 328i xDrive Sport Line with 33,000 miles on it. White with the black interior, unbelievable car so far! Absolutely love it.

The dealer (not BMW) changed the oil before I took delivery and the computer was correct and said 10k until the next oil change - every time you start the car up you know how it tells you how far until the next service.

Well I drive close to 1,000 miles per week commuting to work and Monday morning (~4,100 miles later) it finally went down to 9,000 miles until the next service. This seems a little odd to me - besides BMW's 10k oil change interval which I'll have to get used to - at this rate I'll end up driving 40,000 miles before the car tells me I need to bring it in for service and get the oil changed...?

Anyone have the same issue? I mean this can't be normal.... Right?

If you rely on iDrive for oil changes, especially on an early n20 you're asking for trouble. If it's under warranty (maintenance included) you should still change oil prior to iDrive time imo. I change my oil every 5k - 7k. The early n20s (prior MY 2015) have inferior timing chain hardware and turbo oil lines.

The 10K mile figure is the *NOMINAL* distance. It can be more or less, because the computer monitors the oil's condition (there are threads discussing the capacitance readings from the oil level/condition monitor). Your long commutes - assuming freeway not stop-and-go - is very benevolent for the engine oil, so it's not surprising it has gone up. It probably won't exceed 15K, so don't worry.

And, although many people don't believe in BMW's OCI, 5K in your car under your driving habits is wasting expensive oil. I'd probably just change it at 10K no matter what the car says.
