Using nonsynthetic oil
My negibhor brought me nonsynthetic oil for her oil change and its too late to return the oil its the penzoil 5w30, I'm mixing 5 quarts NONsynthetic 5w30 with 2 quarts fully synthetic 5w30. I'm going to have her do her next oil change at a 5k OCI.
Is this going to harm the engine? The seals ? Rings etc? She's in a massive amount of debt right now and wants to try and get by. The car is an 07 328xi.

It'll be fine for a 5k mile OCI. PYB is still a good oil.

Yeah most "full synthetic" oils sold in the US are group III hydrocracked oils.

And a G3 base stock makes up most of the LL01 rated synthetic oils, or GTL (SOPUS products, also classified as G3). Even a conventional SN is likely a blend of base and G3 stocks to meet the new specs.
Oils have come a long way. Pennzoil Yellow Top is one of the most highly rated 'regular' oils out there...and will go 10K in that 328, let alone 5K for normal driving. Change at 5K and be happy, nothing is going to be wrong with the engine. - b |

Not sure what I'm missing, but isn't $22.97 at stake, since Castrol LL-01 is that price at Walmart? Why not just put the correct oil in? It costs more than $23 to take a family to chik fil a for lunch. There must be more to the story. And this is a forum that often thought Mobil 1 ll 01 was not good enough? Now dino juice is just fine. Odd

BMW recommends synthetic oil because BMW uses extended OCIs. There is nothing wrong using non-synthetic oil in an engine as long as the oil meets the engine manufacturer's specification. So what I would do is check the the owner's manual and see what API/SAE spec the engine needs (i.e. not BMWs LL01 spec). My 2008 Z4 manual says API SH (or higher) and SAE 5W-40 or 5W-30. I'd bet the Penzoil is API SJ, so it suitable. Note that the owners manual says you can use non_BMW approved synthetic in small quantities between changes.
My concerns more are, if she bought the wrong oil, did she get the correct MANN oil filter, or did she get some aftermarket crap filter that will not fit correctly? And I agree with John 070, just go get the right oil and filter. It's $50. The engine easily takes 10,000 mile oil changes, so changing at 5K really is not saving any money. And thinking the engine will get gunked up and need an engine flush is a bit funny IMO.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
