Anyone put a racing steering wheel in their E9X?

My steering wheel in my car is really worn out, the airbag looks like shit, the emblem is missing. I have looked at an m3 style steering wheel but to find one with an air bag is kinda expensive so I was wondering if anyone has put an aftermarket or racing wheel in their e90. Don't hate on me for being "Ricey" lol I just want to see if there is anyone who has done it.
Thanks!

Yes, but you wouldn't like it. Have to weld on a quick detach hub and you lose all switches and the airbag. Wiring in a horn switch isn't all that simple either.

Did you at least wire in a horn like this?

That 328i you have is hardly a 328i anymore, after looking at your mod list and instantly noticing your CAE and Solo on the dash, its obvious its far from initial purpose of a mid-sized luxury car ;P Any more details on the car? I'm assuming your running a TT series or something of the like. Your OMP set up looks proper, hows the road feel on track with that steering wheel? My friend has a similar OMP on his S2000 (no flat bottom), I liked it but felt that the suede didn't grip well unless you had dual layer nomex gloves. And, if i understood correctly, you welded on your quick-release to in order to keep the airbag/controls?

Definitely not a mid-sized luxury car anymore, wasn't really a luxury car to begin with imho though but it's ok for what it is That's a Race Technology DASH3 rather than a SOLO, the logger's in the console.

More details here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1010489 and here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1010510

Actually, it's still a daily, or will be again when it finally gets out of the shop. Slowly working toward an SCCA STU class car but that's another year or two out, need to decide what to do with the engine next.

Had an M3 steering wheel prior and the grip was ok, no complaints even without gloves. The race team uses this wheel in their cars so it seemed like a good choice, haven't used it yet though. With any luck I can get back on the track this fall, been in the shop since last June (long story) but they've been working on it since the end of last year's race season.

All the airbags are gone, well except for the passenger side but that'll come out when the dash is pulled to complete the cage next time around. Somewhere in one of the threads is a picture of the steering column modification with the new hub welded on. No functionality remains from the original wheel. The QR wheel became necessary due to the seats and the roll bar limitations. Definitely necessary when the cage gets completed with FIA bars next time around.

Is your friend's S2000 set up as a TT car? Had a chance to ride in one with an instructor one time, seriously fun car, very cool.

My last car (realizing that I'm not actually answering your question):

Someone mentioned above how slippery the wheel was; I never thought that would have been the case when shopping for a wheel, but it's true. That said, I love this wheel so much that I kept it when I sold the car. I might put it in my e90.

Sweet, I run STU at my local SCCA Autox as well. Don't really run competitively, because there is no point with the Z06s, EVO's and the like that just destroy every event, I just go for fun and to do "testing" in between track days. Running a 328 in STU sounds like a challenge, but seeing the car, I'm sure you'll be ready for it. I feel like it's pretty outclassed for me, and with your car having much less power, even more so. It's not really fair when you have a car that usually runs 305-335 width under stock body with no problems downsizing to fit class regulation of 285. We couldn't fit even 275 in the front without flares or a stupid amount of camber, which would automatically put us in a different class. But I wish the best of luck to you in that regard. And to answer your question, yes my friend's S2000 is a TT car. He is currently running with NASA in TT C+ class. I love that car, it really is a hell of a lot of fun.

Very cool, it's gotta be a blast to run in competition regardless of any chance of winning for no other reason than getting to hang out with all the other loons.

Won't be running AX myself though, roadrace instead. And the rules seem to be different since max tire section width is 245 on 17x8.0 max wheels. Also limited to 3.2L engines and turbo engines have to run restrictor plates and have elevated minimum weights. The N52 can be modified up to 385hp (one known example exists anyway) so it's not uncompetitive, just expensive.

Looks like the weight of the car is going to come in at or under the minimum allowed class weight of 2970# for a 3.0L engine so the rest of the work to do next off-season to finish out the cage and finish gutting the cabin should keep the weight within limits and enable adding some ballast in the passenger floorboard when that seat comes out.

Gonna be fun no matter what and that's the whole point, right?

Good god man, I can't imagine a 3 series with weighing in at less than 3000 pounds. That sounds amazing. Once I get a daily, I'd love to strip mine down like that as well. I wish you the best of luck man. I'd love to keep up with your car's progress! Keep me posted!

Yea right! That'd be awesome. Do you have a build thread for this car pete? Or a post woth some pics? You don't see to many E9x's gutted for all out racing alot, but i think as prices come down even further for early e90 shells there will probably be a few more running around lol.

Post #6 has a couple of links with pictures of the build, which is currently ongoing.

e9xs aren't homologated yet for SCCA racing as far as I can tell but they're eligible. And more race-specific parts are becoming available for the chassis, too.
