Clear coat failure on e90 montego blue

Just like it says my roof and hood are starting to show signs of clear coat failure, 2011 e90 I don't have a garage to keep it in but I always keep it in shade when available I wash and wax it quarterly and wash and spray wax it at least once a week, am I alone in this or have others with this particular color seen the same fate?

I was just detailing my car yesterday and noticed the same thing on my roof. The way it is failing makes me believe my car at some point in its life was exposed to acid rain. I have a 2006 Black Sapphire Metallic car.

The Florida heat and extended UV ray hours does this to MANY non garaged cars in the south. Especially on 6-7 year old cars and older. Pick up a lightweight quality car cover, and cover the car when possible during the hours of 9-6.

I just did this since my car sits in the sun all day at work. I can practically feel the UV hammering away at the clear coat. I don't like the sun

Sorry this happened OP.

I've got a little spot of that about the size of a dime on my Jet Black roof. It looks like the last owner let a little bird shit eat away at it for awhile rather than washing it off.

Since it's black I'll probably just wrap the roof in CF vinyl or something, gotta be cheaper than a respray.

That was my plan, black vinyl as for the hood a respray won't be so bad as I have four small rock chips in the same area that have been bugging me for quite some time

Amazingly, the 12 year old original paint on my E46 is still shiny (and I'm in Phoenix). I do keep it waxed but I think more importantly it is because it's silver.

The sun and heat are brutal out here and a light colored car is a must (for many reasons).

My car is originally from Tuscon AZ and has spent the last 5 years in FL and YES the hood definitely is showing signs of clear coat and paint fade. Too many years out in the sun and being a darker color is hell on any paint. I'm planning on having my hood painted in the next year. Wish I could put it in the garage but my M3 is in MINT condition and I cannot justify leaving it outside.

I'm fortunate that both the e90 and CTS Coupe are parked in garages on weekdays and by the time my wife and I leave work, the sun isn't too bad beating down. On the weekends I'll throw a car cover on the CTS if I'm not lazy as we mostly use the e90 going out. FWIW, the e90 is alpine white and the CTS is pearl white so that does help against the sun.

Same, my 14 year old TiAg E46 still is holding up it's clear coat and its been seeing sunlight often. I do clay bar and wax it 2x a year. The e92 always gets a bit more special treatment with parking in the shade when possible (sapphire black metallic gets hot) and it's garaged when not driven. Waxed and clay barred 2x a year too. One thing I rather do quickly is if a bird shits on my car or some juicy bug is smashed up against the front I try to wash it off or wipe it off if I don't have access to my hose as quickly as possible.

My montego blue paint looks brand new 9 years later but it's garaged all the time.

The sun is a killer to paint.
Sorry OP.

What was the paint thickness of the clear coat? Generally that only happens when the clear coat is too thin. I would expect BMW to cover something like this, especially if it's a defect. It could also indicate a repainted roof, if you got the car used.

I had a seagull poo on my hood for a few days of hot weather. It took me 5 min. to clean it off with water and sponge yesterday. But now that the car is dry I can see an imprint in the shape of that poo etched into the lacquer...

BMW does have a 12 year rust protection on their paint. I say let the clear coat peel and rust then go to BMW lol.

Nothing you can do about it except for a re-spray of that panel

Exactly

Get it professionally resprayed and have them put a clear wrap over it

silver paint is so easy to maintain and always looks great, even when dirty. plus it hides clear coat scratches quite well. love it

Tried that, make sure there are no cats or they will use the roof as a scratching post and end up making things much much worse, which reminds me I have an E90 BMW car cover for sale.
