What's in store for the next generation M3/M4?

Silly question maybe, but if the last production year for the M3 is 2018, what's next? Will there be a complete overhaul for 2019?

I've heard traditionally there's no M for the first two years of a body style. So if we think the new body style will debut in 2018, we can expect an M on that platform come 2020.

I don't know my BMW history in-and-out, so listen to someone else if they tell me i'm wrong

The next M will be out in 2020 and have hybrid all-wheel drive, with electrics driving the fronts. Everybody will scream, cry, and complain, and then unanimously agree it's the best ///M ever.

4cyl turbo hybrid gasoline/electric, AWD, DTC-only.

I can only confirm that these are rumors.

I've seen similar rumors. I can't say its thrilling to think about - but I'm sure bmw isn't going to make something that won't be competitive.

I hope they keep the I6. I4's can be powerful and fun, but not smooth. Our MCS was stupid fun and very quick around town, but even at hwy speeds it was buzzy and not refined. Ok for a Mini, but not on a $70k+ M3/M4.

And the more you drive around at low rpms the more you notice it. That's why I am glad I ordered one of the last of the LR4's with the 5.0L JLR V8. The SC V6 is nice enough, but it's no V8 (and in the case of the LR4, it lost power vs the V8). Those cars are always hanging out at 1500rpm or less.

I'm definitely excited about the CLAR platform. It was able to reduce the current 7er 280lbs from its predecessor.

If the newer M3/M4 replacement is able to shave another 250+lbs from the current F8x range, I'm 100% sold.

The F80 M3 was held back a year to coincide with the release of the M4 since it was going for a coupe to a sedan.

BMW changed the chasis designation for the M's so that they could be developed at the same time as the regular series.

I don't see BMW waiting 2 years this time around to release the next M3.

I hate you!

Eu will have to take a step down with our ridiculous exhaust demands and we will for once see how the cars actually consume the resources spent.

The next generation will be analyzed by how many people usually are in it too and it will be analyzed by previous crash datas. Then they submit and give in: M drivers are the best and the safest and since we don't have families or passengers, the next generation will be a half a ton lighter and it'll have a four liter, v8 engine that the environmentalists love because the car will collect information about the environment from the hit insects in the grille.

We'll spend a few extra bucks while the conductors are not made by kids anymore but all in all cars in general will be cleaner in all aspects, not just in co3's and all the others we never give a fuck about!

Fuck no, I don't want a hybrid and I sure as fuck don't want a 4wd. I have the numbers I did with mine somewhere for long term usage and this car even in sports plus is very eco, just don't crash.

I love everyone and I'm like the biggest hippie out here but I will in this case shoot the messenger of bad news.

(seriously, I wouldn't shoot, but I might make you eat sushi done badly or something as awful. )

Edit: OMC my army buddy is getting married in a week. I'm so fucking bored out of my mind at this wild pre-stag party I had to come back to this post too just to state it is more likely that gg is right than that I am.)

I bought a 7 year warranty with mine. Maybe it's a sucker's bet, but oh well. I plan on keeping it until September 2022 when the warranty expires, and then I'll replace it with the M3 LCI

Who knows really... 7 years is a long time to change my mind...

I would say good move!
Got an extra 2 years on mine (up to 100,000 miles) so I should be OK until the next model. Probably will wait for the CP version this time around though (assuming they do not come up with another set of fuggly 666 wheels)

in 6.5 years i get my next m3 and want this. to finally be able to floor the car and not lose traction. also, for snow winters, this will be awesome.

assuming they dont up the gasoline engine hp (they will) and assuming they put a mediocre hybrid engine (they wont) i can easily believe the new m3 will have at least 100 more HP, and more like 150 to 200

Hopefully Magnaride shocks and a intuitive stability/traction control system and brakes that don't vibrate

I don't think we'll see an AWD M3/M4 until the post-G generation (H?) at the earliest.

I hope they never do. Add it to the M5 or something, not the 3. But I disagree that BMW should add AWD to any M "car".

The M3/4 will never go AWD unless its some KERS like system to the front wheels (in which case it wont be true AWD). That's unlikely in the next 2-4 years due to weight. There's even a question mark over AWD on the F90 M5 that's due out soon due to weight constraints. If the head of M is questioning its necessity on a car with 600+ hp I doubt the M3/4 stand any chance.

I predict an evolution of the current car that hits earlier than expected. The f90 M5 is strongly rumored to go on sale within 1 year of the G30 5 series. I also expect a much greater differentiation between the M3 and the M4 in styling, price and overall positioning (just like the rumored Gxx 6 series) but with the same drivetrain.

Engine - 3.0 single (large) turbo + electric supercharger I6 based off the B58 block with ~520 hp (would make sense to call it the S58).
Weight - <3300 lbs fully loaded w DCT due to CLAR chassis, more CF body panels.
Transmission - 6MT / 7DCT
Drive - RWD only
Front and rear active aero.
BMW will put in a lot of effort into getting the sound right this time.
