Steering wheel button units: blanks versus Ⓜ buttons featuring on several ///M cars

As we know, the M2 steering wheel features two blanks in the button unit on the left hand side.

F87 M2:

On several other ///M cars those buttons feature Ⓜ1 and Ⓜ2 icons.

F80 M3:

Part # of the button units featuring those icons: BMW part # 61 31 7 849 409

Name: M3_Buttons_Units.jpg
Views: 12262
Size: 42.0 KB

Strange enough, part # websites show exactly the same part # for the M2 button units, despite the blanks:
  • 2' F87 M2 (11/2014 — 05/2016) (blanks !)
  • 3' F80 M3 (04/2012 — 06/2015)
  • 3' F80 M3 LCI (01/2015 — 05/2016)
  • 4' F82 M4 (02/2013 — 05/2016)
  • 4' F83 M4 (06/2013 — 05/2016)
  • 5' F10 (06/2010 — 05/2016)
  • 6' F06 GC (10/2011 — 02/2015)
  • 6' F06 GC LCI (09/2014 — 05/2016)
  • 6' F12 (03/2011 — 02/2015)
  • 6' F12 LCI (09/2014 — 05/2016)
  • 6' F13 (03/2011 — 02/2015)
  • 6' F13 LCI (06/2014 — 05/2016)
  • X5 M F85 (04/2013 — 05/2016)
  • X6 M F86 (10/2013 — 05/2016)
    (source: here)
M2 parts websites that show the Ⓜ1 and Ⓜ2 buttons, rather than blanks:Though I assume the size of the button units to be identical, I got no info whether the electronics connect properly on the M2. Of course, the programmable dedicated Ⓜ1 and Ⓜ2 buttons won't function on the M2, but - if electronics function properly - ain't it more aesthetic to have dummies rather than blanks on a steering wheel ? Would be kinda cool if these could even become functional in any way whatsoever.

Interested to know if someone already gave it a try.

Cheapo alternative: simply add whatever icon, lettering or logo on the blanks.

Two more ///M logos - the added horsepower would be awesome.

Would be a perfect spot to wire the mute switch for a radar detector.

That will offer twice +10hp for sure....

There must be an option to code something between those buttons. Exhaust valve button? Radar detector button?

I thought of this too, it'd be very convenient.

It might be possible!

We would simply need to copy the rocker switch up/down?

that can't be that hard, can it?

Well, an engineer friend said it might be done by splitting the cables that controls the [Sport] and [Comfort] buttons. But, we may run into not enough current or something to activate the settings? as now the cable is split into two ways, or it simply won't work.. not sure. I'd love to give it a try though, make two buttons for the steering wheel to toggle between comfort and sport.

Are there specific part numbers just for the M1 M2 buttons? I would like to take a look at this with my engineer buddy.

There shouldn't be current loss. Voltage drop at the connection, maybe, but would be very minimal if done right. It's just a switch like any other.

As indicated in the first post, we only know the part # of the button units featuring those icons: BMW part # 61 31 7 849 409

No info made available about the buttons itself. Hence, I doubt that you can get these separately. It looks like it's all or nothing.

I'll stop by the dealership and see if I can get some info out of them.

Thanks!

Sounds good and promising then...just a thought though are switches not on the can-bus-thingie?

The wires from the switch will go to a controller or a relay. the switch is the dumb part, meaning it just completes a circuit. The controller just needs a signal and won't care where it comes from.

The button on the console should be a3 position rocker switch and the switches on the steering wheel would need to match that. The common wire for the neutral position will need to be on both steering wheel buttons. Then one of each "up" and "down" to each of the buttons on the steering wheel. If that makes sense.

PM me if you want me to draw you up a wiring diagram. I won't be able to do one until later on next week because I'm at work and don't have access to BMW factory drawings.

Reviving a stale thread. Did anyone figure out whether or not we're able to add the M1/M2 modes?

Sat in a 2017 m2 today and it had these buttons! I think they are quick presets to change between driving modes.
