340i vs 335i ppk
I was wondering if anyone here has any first hand experience driving both a 335i with the Performance Power Kit (PPK) and how it compares to a 340i; assuming everything else pretty much stock on both.
I own a 335i with PPK and really love the car as my DD. I find it has ore than adequate power and drives well. My lease is coming up and I'm considering a 340i as an option. I know I can schedule a test drive in the 340i but was also hoping to gain some others perspectives on this comparison with more driving time and experience, than me just taking a quick test drive at a dealer. My guess is that they will drive pretty similar, but wonder if the 335i with PPK feels a bit more aggressive that the 340i. Thank you for any feedback.

I test drove the 335i with MPPK + MPE and I felt 340i pulls harder. 340i in sport+ has nice exhaust burbs but not as loud as MPE.

I haven't driven then 340i but I can certainly imagine it being the better of the two. However, a standard N55 F30 car with bolt ons will fix that power gap.

hands down the 340i feels faster. This might be due to the turbo lag in the n55 engine. No lag at all in the 340i. 340i also pulls harder all the way to redline in my opinion. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

I am also considering replacing my 335I x-drive with a 340I x-drive. My 335 is equipped with PPK and DHP. While driving the tighter 340 was better than my 72K mile 2013 335I, i was not blown away...
Maybe if running full throttle you would notice, but day to day type driving did not seem too different.

I appreciate all of your responses. While I am a little surprised to hear the 340i pulls harder than a 335i with PPK, I've also very pleased to hear this.
I was expecting to hear the 340i did not feel as strong/powerful/aggressive. I'm now looking forward to testing driving one myself.

For a true apples to apples comparison I`d think you`d want to test drive a 340i with the MPPK (that`s assuming BMW ever gets around to releasing it in the US) versus your 335 PPK.

Hey guys,
I have an F30 335i with MPPK, MPE, Dinan Stage 2 and Dinan suspension bits. I had my car in for an oil change a few months ago and got a 340i loaner. My initial response was, this is going to be boring and slow. Honestly, the engine sound from the 340i is amazing, it obviously doesn't compare to the performance of my car but the sound was so good I honestly loved pushing it and hearing that engine. I loved that car and if I couldn't afford an M3, the 340i would be an excellent choice, awesome car. You really need to test drive one to understand the difference, I met a BMW corporate guy that works in some type of training position (about 6 months ago), he explained that the "modular" engines in the newer BMW lineup (340i, i8, etc.) perform differently and I can say for sure, it's a different car than the 335i. Hope this helps...good luck either way.

Tell me, when was the last time you drove a 335i with the EWG PPK?

test drove both of them for half an hour each back to back to back with my 2010 S4 which is now been traded in. That was actually my second go at it. Three months ago I was able to drive all three of them in my initial test drive for and hour each. Make sure the cars you go test drive are NEW. Sometimes demo cars that have been driven by others on leisurely test drives will feel slow because the transmission has adapted to the slow test drivers. |

Big difference is the peak 320 horsepower across 1000rpms. The engine is a gem in the 340i further improving from the fantastic N55.

I'm very pleased hearing all this positive feedback regarding the 340i. I'm actually looking forward to getting behind the wheel to test drive one myself now.
Perhaps I won't miss my 335i PPK as much as I thought I would. And yes, if I can add PPK to a new 340i I'm sure I'll be very pleased with the upgrade. Until that option is available, I'm just focusing on the upgrade to the stock 340i.

I have been owning the 335i for 4 years and planing to own another 6 more years. HP has never come to an issue if compare with most of the cars on the street. Install MPPK & MPE is just because it's nice to have more power without avoiding warranty. 340i is nice, but 25hp and 40ft/lbs will not make a lot of difference on daily driving. Maybe M3 is a better choice for HP / TQ.

I had a couple of TSBs done on my steering setup, I had some issues with scraping noises coming from the steering. After that the car felt much more planted and the feel was better. I don't know why the steering concern is overblown, but I feel my 2014 is not bad at all. I have the 19' staggered setup and I came from a LCI E90, which I drove for 5+ years.
I plan to keep the car for 6-7 years and hence voted against going for a brand new engine in the 340i. I guess I am a conservative type. One thing to note is that C&D was able to get the 335i 0-60 mph 4.6 seconds and 340i is around 4.9 seconds (from BMW website). In real world, a more efficient engine would perform as good or better than a faster or less optimized engine. So at this point in time, maybe the N55 is more optimized than the B58.

Some of you guys with the 340i need to get to go make a video with a race with 335i mppk to see what the difference is due to the elimination of lag. |
