What do you guys think about this E92 328i?
Just found this local ad, it's an 2009 E92 328i Black/Black with 82000KM (50952 miles). He's the second owner, no accidents or claims. He's asking $16 000 CAD.
What do you guys think of the price and what should I offer him? Do you think a MY09 328i with 82000 KM is a ticking time bomb and a reliability concern moving forward? Mileage is definitely one of my concerns on this vehicle. I was looking for an MY11 due to it being newer, with LED's and most likely with lower mileage but it's been tough trying to find one with Sports Package. Granted I can change the MY09 taillights to LCI afterwards. Options: -Paddle Shift -Sport Seats with slide-out thigh bolster support -Sport Steering Wheel -Sport Suspension -MP3/USB/iPhone Connections -Heated Seats AND Heated Steering wheel -18" BMW Wheels with new tires Mods: (Would prefer if it was stock but it is what it is) -M Sport Front bumper/splitters -M Performance Exhaust with receipt Thanks everyone |

Get a set of tools, take of the engine cover and inspect it. Look for any leaks especially around the valve cover. Check the eccentric valve actuator as well.
Other than that it looks like a nicely optioned e92. Also check the condition of the brake pads and rotors. Any pics? |

Why would it be a ticking time bomb? It has no turbos. The only think that you really need to worry about in the next 20km would be the water pump and therm. which is $1k to get done. Other than that the 328 is quite reliable. Did you run the VIN yourself to check if the car has no accidents?

That seems like a solid car... 328's really aren't the "ticking time bombs" that 335's are.
50k for a BMW is really nothing. The 328 will take regular maintenance, but there area really only a few "big ticket" items that somewhat commonly show up. Valve cover will crack and the gasket will go, Oil filter housing gasket, water pump/thermostat, real main seal, oil pan gasket, and the eccentric shaft sensor. Maybe can be DIY'ed if youre capable, or find a good Indy shop and these won't be THAT bad, even for a BMW. Buy it and enjoy!

16K Cdn is a pretty good price. An E9x 328 is not a ticking time bomb but it could bleed you pretty good. If you don't want to pick up a wrench, plan on $2-2.5K Cdn each year for service and repair at a decent indy. You could cut that in half or more if you were prepared to spend some weekend time with a car. |

I wouldn't buy an automatic. 328i is pretty bulletproof, the previous owner would have to beat it and neglect it for your wallet to suffer as a result. Performance Exhaust is worth the money and I would consider it a bonus.
If you are serious about buying the car, get a pre-purchase inspection.

My 2009 328i ran great from 30k miles to 100k(present). This past year I've had the fuel pump go out on me and the starter. I also replaced the factory Bosch ignition coils and spark plugs with Delphi Coils and NGK Plugs.
At around 50k miles the only thing I'd even consider worrying about are the Vanos Solenoids. Either clean and swap their positions or just get new Vanos Solenoids and I'd be confident in the vehicle working everyday until it gets close to 100k miles.

I just bought an '08 328i with 124000 miles on the clock. Car seems to be in excellent shape, so far.
I had a '96 318ti with 216000 miles on it. It was going strong. Ran great, 30.5 average MPG since I bought it in 1999. The F150 truck that rear-ended me didn't play fair. I wanted to take it to 300000 miles at least, assuming I lived that long! Take good care of an old BMW and it will last forever. Don't know about the newer ones... too many computers. |
