2nd oil analysis

I've changes oil twice so far; 7800 and 7080 miles. I had an oil anaysis run each time. Wear metals suggest a more frequent change interval. I will switch to 5000 for while. Analysis attached.

Thanks for the info. After reading reports like this I'm glad I had my first oil change at 4k miles.

Thank you very much. Blackstone Labs confirms my theory that oil and filter changes are cheap insurance.

How much does it cost for Blackstone to do the test?

How long do you plan to keep your car?

When they say "This type of BMW engine" what do they mean? Do they mean the N52 (I think that's the designation for the engine in the E90)? Do they have enough data on this exact engine to make those statements? Even though it is different than the "average" is that outside the acceptable range for the long term tests done on the engine?

Just a couple of questions... Data interpertation is always subjective, just looking for a clarification.

However, the engine is not going to be hurt by changing the oil more frequently, so I'll agree it's not a bad idea..

I'm confused - why are your Molybdenum and Calcium readings so high on the recent sample in Feb.?

I changed the oil every 3k in my E46 330 and I will continue with the E90. I am going to do the 1st oil/filter service @ 1500 miles though.

The aluminum and magnesium content shouldn't be a surprise. After all, isn't that what our engines are made of?

This engine doesn't have cast iron cylinder sleeves like all other aluminum blocks in production cars seem to have. Most manufacturers say the cast iron sleeves add longevity and durability to the engine - which begs the question... Has there ever been an engine with an aluminum block, without the cast iron liners, that is known for longevity?

edit: Did some research (should have done this before ) but the aluminum used in the engine is an alloy with high levels of silicon, making the material much harder. A few years ago, BMW made V8 engines with Nikasil and the liners deteriorated because of crappy sulfur-rich US fuels. They replaced tons of these with engines fitted with Alusil liners, which is a sort of aluminum-silicon alloy.

I was going to delete the post, but figured I ought to answer my own stupid question...

It seems like its deffinetly gotten better. If you compare the first and recent oil changes with the universal average, then you see the positive change. Iron, Copper, Lead, Molybdenum, Silicon, Sodium, Calcium, and Magnesium have more or less settled toward the universal average.
You seem to be averaging about 24k miles per year, so you will be enjoying your E90 for 6 years, enjoy it.

BTW, are you changing the oil yourself of the stealership?

I was about to point out that high alloy content is normal in new engines, as they wear in/break in completely (which takes tens of thousands of miles)...but I went back and noticed that the lab report already mentions that.

Both of those are additives in the oil

Now for them being so low in the first test agains the second could probably be one of the following

1) They were used up by the engine during breakin

2) They were never present in the first oil, which could mean either
BMW is using a breakin oil, or the second oil put in the car isnt the usual BMW stuff.

So northcountry what oil did you use ???

So, if oil changes are included with the car, but you want to change the oil more often than every 15k miles, do you have to pay for it?

Interesting

I wonder if its maybe a difference between the new LL04 oil spec in Europe and the older LL01 ( LL01 is fully approved for Petrol E90 engines, but the LL04 was developed with new diesel catalyst and particle filter requirements in mind )

I must try and see if those two chemicals were reduced for the different spec oil

Yup, looks like the difference in Calcium and Moly is due to the car being filled with the LL04 spec at the factory, and then filled with the LL01 spec at your oil change

Again, this is not a problem, most places only get the LL01 spec, and the LL04 is only a requirement for new diesel cars with particle filters.

yeah, and the service manager said that an oil change is about 85.00 plus tax. They just keep the meter running in the car, so that whenever your car tells you that you have to change your oil (ie. 12,000, 15,000 miles) you will still get your free oil change.
