Hi all,

Yesterday whilst on the motorway my traction control light started flashing which in turn deactivated cruise control and if I tried to accelerate would reduce engine power too slowing me down further. May not be related but this all happened 10 minutes after hitting a large dip (almost a pot hole at 70mph) on the motorway with both front and rear driver side wheels. In the end I was forced to disable traction control fully by long pressing the DTC button.

Plugged my scan tool in today to find no errors, but monitored the wheel speed sensors and when the traction light flashes one or both the rear wheels display no speed at all, not even 0. After a few more flashes all four wheel sensors display nothing which I only managed to cure by disabling traction control.

With traction control off monitoring the sensors shows the "rear left" wheel going faster than the other three occasionally. Is this left when sat in the car or left when looking at the front of the car?

Sorry, not helping but how do you monitor the wheel speed sensors? A display within the scanning tool? Wording does seem a bit ambiguous. It should use driver/offside surely? What is the diagnostics tool?

Sorry I should've said, I'm using a Creator C310 I think it is? I do have access to a BMWhat adapter too but couldn't find the wheel speed sensors to monitor in its list.

Check the rear driveshaft rings for scrubbing,quite a common issue now.

What do I need to take off to see these? Just the wheels or more?

Raise the car (ramp ideal) and you can see without removing anything.just where the shafts meet the hubs.

Jacked car up and couldn't see straight away and as I've lent my jack stands out I didn't want to be under there too long. Tried to remove the sensor but more force was needed than I wanted to use again as the car was up on just a jack, unless there is a particular method to removing them without destroying them? Would like to check the sensor to make sure it's not damaged.

Had a look on eBay too for new rings and seen one seller has them listed for £4 each then the rest are around £20 each. Has anyone had decent luck with a particular seller?

I don't know the solution but what i would say is never go under a car without the proper support such as jack stands. It just isn't worth it and jacks aren't designed to hold a car up!

Absolutely.

As I said you really need the car properly up to see what I'm talking about.

I have had this exact same issue for the passed month in my 325i...traction control kicking in randomly and cutting power eventually leading to driving stability warning, ABS and FTM failure.

Not only me, but the same has happened to my Dad's (new to him 2 weeks ago) 330D....have you found any solutions yet?

Wheel speed sensor will most likely be the culprit. I had it on my E92 a while back. Replacement sensor sorted it.

its a wheel speed sensor, or a broken reluctor ring on the CV. Or both.

The reluctor rings swell up due to rust and either crack or rub against the sensor, both of which causes errors.

Seems to be a very common issue indeed....can anyone recommend a reasonably priced OBD scanner that would detect which wheel speed sensor could be at fault. I have a cheap one that reads only engine codes, and my figuring is that buying a scanner would be cheaper than paying for diagnostics at a local garage.

I had a spare wheel under part of the car whilst I did a quick check, but I'd never work off a jack. Still need to actually get around to checking the car properly though.

Also, when the code reader says rear left I'm going to assume it means the left of the car when you're sat in it? Code was 5DB2, rear left speed sensor pulses
