Stock OE turbos are cheap! $558 mitsubishi vs. $657 genuine bmw

So my car is at the shop and I saw my mechanic guy pull up his computer to give me pricing on the car. He tells me he has two sources. One is direct from the dealership (Crevier BMW in Orange county) and the other is a OE supplier.

He said both turbos should be the same just one is branded BMW genuine and the other is Mitsubishi.

The Genuine BMW one was $657 and the Mitsubishi OE one was $558 each. He asked me which one I wanted. It's a $100 difference and does it make sense to get the genuine one?

I never knew turbos were this cheap but clearly, anybody in the US should be able to get their turbos replaced for under $2500. Add $200 for miscellaneous hardware kit. The shop is charging me $1200 for labor.

So keep this in mind guys, don't get ripped off! I don't see why we're paying nearly 3-4X more for aftermarket turbos that don't even last half as long.

If u plan on staying fbo and are okay with that sure, but being fbo your turbos won't last as long as a bone stock car with 8psi will

I believe you get what you pay for. The "aftermarket" ones are typically built to withstand a beating especially if they're made for high rpms/heat and what not. The OEM ones are made to last the life of the vehicle, just my .02

Well OEM units are made by Mitsubishi. But if you're not sure, get the BMW branded. I know there are quite a few aftermarket options available that are supposed to last long and be better, but the horror stories made me put another set of OEM units. If you're not planning to go much beyond 400whp OEMs are fine. Depends on what your goals are

Misubishi are OEM, just not stamped with "BMW." The difference may lie in the warrant. Also, see if there is a core charge for the BMW ones, there most likely is. Absolutely zero difference in quality. TD03/04 are JDM snails!

Not sure what the warranty is on the mitsu branded, but the Bmw branded should come with 2 year parts warranty. This means if they break, any Bmw dealer should cover the cost of the part and the cost of labor to replace the failed Bmw part.

That's only if installed by a BMW dealer in which case you are looking at about $4000 parts and labor.

These turbos ARE OEM turbos. There are no other application for these (whole assembly) and they are the OEM supplier. No different then buying TRW M3 control arms.

Not necessarily. They did the labor on my faulty water pump even though it was replaced at an Indy shop. Required it in fact, I wanted to have the Indy do it and they wouldn't warranty it out unless they did labor.

Yeah, TisherBMW has the $650 price for each OEM turbo which is pretty darn good already. But if you guys try to talk to your local mechanic, he might have wholesale pricing and can get you the Mitubishi OEM ones for like $560 each. I don't know who the supplier is for my mechanic guy. But I know he uses some online database.

i found a source for the Mitsubishi turbos at $589. GPS sells them. I just want to clarify how to tell if the turbos have the latest wastegate assembly. Is there a date code after which point Mitsubishi upgraded the wastegate? The rep said the part has been superceded multiple times but does not know how to confirm the wastegate assembly. Someone have a picture of the build date location?

Likely no different between Mitsubishi or BMW since Mitsubishi is the manufacturer.

The question comes down to warranty and being the latest design.
