340i JB4 warranty/dealership experiences?

I understand that many of you swap out your JB4 when taking your 340i to the dealer.

Have you heard any stories about the dealerships knowing about JB4 installs, even when they are removed, and causing warranty issues?

Once removed the JB4 leaves no trace.

If I were BMW I'd track any anomalous outputs to the engine outside of norms ..
from their pov this is like overclocking a chip.. do at your own risk warranty no more
I dont see why they havent done that.. saves them money in the longrun y saving on warranty for guys who stress the engines
.. OR HAVE THEY ... da-dun.. (eyes back and forth)

The JB4 reports stock values to the ECU. The ECU never sees anything out of order.

i think it lies to the ECU and the ECU doesn't know what it doesn't see.

I heard that the JB4 leaves shadow codes on your ecu and a dealer can see these shadow codes even after the JB4 is removed.

Don't know man, the only way to guarantee there will be no issues is to not do JB4. I have to say it's a compelling package but not worth it IMO.

My car was at the dealer last week for brakes and oil change and they also did a full inspection for any codes, leaks or other warranty items. Left my jb4 in the car as well as DP. Put it on map 0 and hid the obd cable. They said everything looked great.

Thanks for the info. Does map 0 take out the cel light from DP?

I wouldn't take too much comfort from that, personally. They had no reason to hassle you over the JB4 in that scenario because everything was fine. If everything wasn't fine it might have gone down differently.

I'm not one of those rabidly anti-JB4 guys that exist on this board, but I strongly believe that you should go into this eyes wide open. You have to pay to play, so only go this route if you are financially prepared for the risk of having your warranty voided. This is coming from someone who has chipped multiple cars in the past, but is probably going to go the MPPSK route for my 340i because the engine is new.

I don't think so, but I put it on 0 a block from the dealer--I have heard it takes a while to show.

I had a JB4 on my e90 and when the water pump went out I did remove it. I asked my SA a while back about mods and he said there would not be a problem with warranty unless the mod caused it. So, if my car has an issue relating to how it runs I will remove the JB4, but for things like brakes, oil change or water leak like I had two months ago I did not. Yeah, kind of lazy on my part, but there also is a law in place that does not allow them to not perform warranty work that is unrelated to a tune. Would I recommend removing a tune for any dealer visit? Yes, but I am giving my experience.

I know the catless DP will cause a CEL but the JB4 clears it automatically. The only outlying problem from that is the readiness monitors will never clear (meaning you will have issues getting an inspection, at least in my state of NY).

Funny you should ask. My car was at my dealership for a few days. I told them it was running funny (idling). Plus since my warranty was almost expired, had them do some maintenance items. My initial thinking was a coil or injector type issue like everyone else has had. I kept JB4 installed on Map 0,plus my Intake, CP and IC are clearly evident. Tech of course found it, ran some tests, uninstalled JB4, drove it and attributed the JB4 as the culprit. They cleared the faults, etc...long story short.... no big deal. Some SA and Techs are very cool about the JB4 as they all pretty much know about and can figure it out quickly. I guess the thing to know is if they can prove JB4 blew up your engine, turbo's etc. they will have to void the warranty. It has to be a major issue and they have to prove it without a shadow of a doubt. But there is Magnusson act, etc. people have mentioned. Most say uninstall before you go in which I would recommend if you don't have a cool SA and TECH.

Was the JB4 defective? Have you reached out to Terry to try and figure out what was going on?

My advice is never to take a modified vehicle to BMW period. Remove mods before going in. Takes like 15 min to remove a JB4 once you've done it before.
