M3 owners, which snow tire do you run in winter?

Looking for recs for some snow tires that will fit the f80 oem 19s (open to dedicated wheels if there is a compelling reason). Thinking of Blizzaks or Nokians. Thoughts from you all?

It kind of depends how much snow you want to tackle. If it's a real blizzard with over 6" of snow are you going out in your M3? I have the Contis on the 18" 640M rims and they are fine in 4 inches of snow, but if I needed the car for worse conditions I would opt for Nokian or at least Michelin Ice-X. But since I don't, I'm happy with the performance snows.

I almost added to my original post that this is our only car, but we live in Cambridge and don't need a car for any single trip because we can walk or Uber pretty much anywhere we need to go in a pinch (eg that blizzard)

Probably would not go with a performance snow, but definitely don't want studs because I want something that's going to be reasonably fun when it's dry and just cold.

Then I think maybe you do want a performance snow tire. There was nothing last winter that a performance snow couldn't handle. The year before though there were many days not worth venturing out.

I ran a square 18" set up that I picked up used 1 season on Blizzaks.

Definitely lost some in the performance/feel (if you have have winters on you shouldn't really be doing 100+ mph ) and last year wasn't exactly a blockbuster but I did do a 800 mile run up through northern maine to canada and they were more than fine.

If you have the storage space having dedicated rims makes switch over a 30 minute exercise and saves the potential for mounting issues to crop up. Also saves your summer/stock rims from a lot of the salt etc. Plus if you can find a set of older OEM rims you can likely get 50-80% of the rim cost money back if/when you go to sell in the future.

You have me second thinking myself on my earlier comment about perf winters. Since I live in the city, and can't see myself ever needing to drive outside of the boston area where roads would not be cleared at all. Worst case scenario really - is I get caught in one of the suburbs and it snows 6 inches....and have to struggle home in that. Sounds like you think that the performance snows would do in that pinch?

Also - which contis do you have?

gdawson03 - would be interested in knowing if you think that blizzaks would be overkill for city only driving. - Thoughts?

This thread needs to be closed ASAP! Not only because the warm weather just started for us Midwesterners and the last thing I want to see is anything about winter, but also because there are 1,000,000 winter tire threads on the forum.

Mostly because of reason one though!

I know there are a bunch forums - but assume that needs vary in urban versus rural, canada versus US, etc setting...so wanted to get a view from the locals.

I echo getting a performance snow if you are mostly in urban areas. I switched from a 135i with regular snows to the M3 with Pirelli Sottozero 3 and on cold, dry roads, the difference in grip is astounding. I did not notice materially worse snow/ice performance, but since I live relatively close to boston, they plow the roads almost immediately. For the heavy snowfall I don't drive my RWD cars anyways.

Dunlop WinterSport 3D with a staggered setup on my E90. I downsized to 18's and went an inch narrower on the rims. No issues, other than ground clearance, for 3 winters now...

This post makes me feel a bit better about considering an M3 in the NE area.

I'm coming from an awd 335, and picking up the M in a month or so.

A little anxious about it being our only car, but it seems to do decently in the snow. May be getting a beater in a few months if it's not working out.

2018 F80 M3 Winter Tires

I am trying to get tires for 2018 f80 M3 competition package, tire size are 265/30 - 20 Front and 285/30 - 20 rear and the only ones I can find are through Tired Rack Pirelli Winter Sottozero, which get great ratings but are not light on the wallet for winter tires. Any suggestions? I was trying to get Bridgestone Blizzaks as they got the best rating when researching but they don't come up in searches.

Get yourself a set of 18in wheels and get a square winter setup.

I've had Michelin PA4s on my E90 as well as F80 M3s on square setups and never had any issues.
