I was excited when I saw NJ but turns out it's 100 miles from NYC.

How does the course work? Instructors in vehicles or solo?

LoL!

You should go for it. It shouldn't take YOU more than 45 minutes, okay tops 50 minutes with traffic to get there

You will definitely enjoy it.

Won't I need new tires after doing one of those? My ex bf used to destroy his tires every time he did a track day. This would be my first one. I've only gone to drag strips.

It will depend on how hard you drive. If you're fairly conservative, your tires will hardly wear more than say driving through the mountains in a spirited fashion. If you're chucking the car around hard, you'll probably need a new set of rubber.

I would probably worry more about brakes fading if you do many spirited laps. But if drive conservatively and manage your brakes then you shouldn't have any issues. Same with your tires.

BTW - follow this tread regarding proper tire pressures:

I'm torn between using my own car doing a track day up here or going to SC and doing the one day M school. I suppose there's a convenience in not having to fly but I wouldn't need to use my own car in SC.

If you don't do much track driving, I'd highly recommend the school regardless. It's a worthwhile experience.

This event will be broken down into four run groups based on prior experience:
NOVICE | This is your first track event
BEGINNER | You have driven on track 1 or 2 times
INTERMEDIATE | You have been to 3 to 5 track events
ADVANCED | You have been to more than 5 events
Novice, Beginner, and Intermediate drivers will be accompanied by an instructor. Intermediate students will have the ability to run solo in their second and third session if they prove proficiency and safety during their first session. Advanced students may request instruction at their discretion but are not required to be accompanied by an instructor.

If this is your first event, you should have no problem maintaining the life of your tires, especially during a one-day event. Your instructor will work with you to help you experience the fundamentals of high performance car control and vehicle dynamics without having to thrash your tires.

Haha!

I really don't understand why dealers are pushing nitrogen in the M cars. Most likely the extra $49.00 is a great revenue for them.

I have never used it in my M cars and never had any issues.

If you need to inflate your tires you should not have any issues as you are only putting a couple of pounds of regular air. Just make sure you are maintain proper pressures and do a check on a regular intervals (monthly) for normal driving and you should be okay along with preserving your tires longer.

I was told that if I'm going to put air in that I need to deflate the entire tire before doing so.

Yep! However, helmets will be available to rent through the pro shop at the track.

Air is 80% nitrogen.

The whole N2 tire thing is purely BS to charge you for what is essentially air. And really, it makes the most difference in very cold climates, so a super hot tire at the track will see little benefit.

You worry to much. Relax and have fun with the event.

It is perfectly okay to correct your tire pressure with regular compressed air without diminishing the benefits of nitrogen inflation.

You don't have to do a BMW DC at SC. There are plenty of great driver's schools at a track near you, e.g. Skip Barber at Lime Rock and other tracks, Bondurant, etc.

I attend an Skip Barber 2-3 day Driver School (forget which) and an Advanced Car Control clinic at Lime Rock. In the driver's school we used their Dodge Neons (not sure what the use now) to practice and for my final lap instead of driving the Dodge Viper I chose to drive my E36M3, http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/bpg...=view&id=18376

The Advanced Car Control clinic was in Skippy cars.

This was on their small autocross track not the main Lime Rock track. Though they do have racing schools on those tracks. And for those that think M2 auto blip is sacrilege, try learning to double clutch and blip a Skippy car not that easy if you don't know what your doing. More like rubbing your tummy and tapping your head.

I see your point, however, I think you will have more fun driving and experiencing your M2.

I've done the M School in SC and it was a lot of fun driving all the different M cars. I had the most fun driving the X5M. It is an amazing vehicle for its size. Amazing chassis control and power delivery as I never expected it especially coming out of an M5.

Also, visiting the factory was a plus for me. Did you know that the BMW plant in SC is the largest US auto exporter?

I do. Only because I don't want to f*ck anything up and have a problem at some point. O=)
