Tons of Random People Asking me how much the M2 costs...Rude?

First off, I have never asked a stranger how much he paid for his car or any substantial purchase....

Secondly, of all my semi rare, or modified cars, I have never had so many random people ask me how much the car costs...3 today alone. At the few "Car shows" I attended, forget about it...Gas stations, 7-11, etc...I expect people to compliment or just general attention but, "hey, how much did it cost?"
My ego def gets uncomfortable but I personally get insulted. Especially when compliments are replaced with Ive been seeing these in magazines and Im thinking about getting one (another common theme Ive been hearing on a reg basis)

I'm not a dick, but a big part of me wants to say the the car is very cheap (to me) but you can't get one LOL or just inform them its a rude question and if they are reading about them, the base price is no secret...

Just weird. Anyone else experience this?

How much it "Costs" is different (usually) than asking how much you paid. So, if they said "what does it cost?" I don't find that it's rude. That's when you quote the msrp and explain that there is a shortage so dealer markup is common. It's usually a question about the ballpark the car is in. Not a question about your finances.

I see what your saying and agree...

What upsets me is that I get the feeling the car has a "cheap look" to the people asking at least. I say this bc the people who ask all seem to be lower income people, who follow up with Im going to buy one, until I tell them the base is cheap in the mid 50's but like any new car by the time you leave youve spent 60+....They get a look like they were waiting for me to tell them it was 20k

I know I sound like a materialistic jerk. But my prob is not at all w the ppl but I am a person who adittedly cares way too much about what others think and I worry the car looks cheap to the average joe schmo...

Just wondering if I am alone, or if others are getting bombarded w this question WAYYY more than usual?

You sound like a jerk.. take it as a compliment they don't actually plan on buying the car.

I got this a couple of times from people who don't know what the car is.

Everyone else who know what the car was didn't need to ask. They can use the internet.

I am not a fan of talking about money with anyone so I would likely take that question as rude, especially when anyone who really wants to know can find out on their iPhone in about 10 seconds. I would probably say, enough and leave it at that. I never ask anyone a question like that, if I know what someone paid for their car, house or anything else it would only be because they told me, otherwise I will never know. My best friend has a 2014 911, its his dream car, he had it for a year before I knew what he paid and that was because he mentioned it.

Dang, I guess I'm the opposite of the OP. I don't want the car (with me in it) to look expensive and snobby. But I think that's WHY they ask. It looks special/unique/expensive so to normal people it's practically a supercar.

If friends are asking price, I'll tell them. Normal people, I'll just say "too much" and leave it at that.

Hate to say it, but, sounds like you bought this car for "status". But whatever floats your boat.

OP- I'm confused ? Is the issue that your want people to think it's an expensive car and you don't want to tell them the price (which actually is cheap, relatively speaking) or if you tell them the price they will discount it as a cheaper nice looking car.
I'd say just tell them if they ask.
And drive off !!!

It's not like they're asking you what your income is; why would you consider it a rude question when the answer is publicly-available knowledge? Whenever people ask me how much my Lotus cost, I don't see it as any different from if they had asked how fast it is.

In all honesty, this entire thread reflects rather poorly on you, as you've pointed out that you specifically tell these "lower income people" (your words) that 50k-ish is "cheap", which comes off as an attempt to throw your "wealth" in their faces.

If you care more about what people think than the driving experience itself, you probably shouldn't have purchased an M2; an M4, M6, or Mercedes of some kind would probably serve you better as a status symbol. The 2-series IS the "cheap" BMW, M or not.

U might find it weird but it's clearly a compliment if it's in the wild.

If this happens at a car meet you should very well know that it's regular conversation.

I drove lots of expensive cars all over the place in my entire life and most of the time never got any compliments.

Depends on their motivation whether it is rude or not.

If someone wants to know how much it costs to determine whether they like it or not, they are shallow. If they want to know how much it costs to make sure their own car is more exclusive, they are a**holes. If they ask because they think it is beautiful and want one (whether it is realistic for them or they are a teenage dreamer) it is a compliment.

But perhaps you don't like the question because it reduces your great choice, patience and great taste into just a monetary valuation. I can see that as being off putting.

DKM3Power I agree with the general sentiment that they were compliments. After mentioning an amount (say 50) you can ask back "do you like it?" then it's their turn to explain their curiosity...

I'm pretty sure THIS is the definition of being a dick.

To the OP - if you want to impress all the poor peasants and you have so much money that an M2 is so cheap to you, buy a Lambo. Or a Ferrari. Or any other car that costs enough that no peasants will bother you.

PS: the price is on the internet. No harm in telling them how much it costs unless you're ashamed of driving a "cheap" car.

I've been asked that for a variety of cars and always take it to mean "what's MSRP" from someone looking for basic information. Especially in this case if it's someone with like a Benz who knows little to nothing about BMW for instance, it's probably just an honest request for info about a car they may consider.

I used to get that with my prior car, Z4 M coupe. I would tell them " mid 50s" when new and usually the response was then " nice car" and I would drive off. My feeling was that with that car, the uninitiated thought it was much more $$$s!
