335 Brake part numbers
Firstly, not 100% sure this is the correct place to post it, so please guide me if I am wrong.
Secondly I did Google for the answer but couldn't find anything conclusive. I understand the brakes from a 335 d/i will fit onto my car. My question, can someone please give me the part numbers that I need to order from BMW please? - I obviously need the bigger discs, pads, calipers? - What else do I need to order to get the brakes to fit onto my car, (can you please be very specific)? - For the moment I just want to change my front, or would you suggest changing the back also? - Any recommendations as to what discs/pads combo, for the front (and back)? Anything that I haven't mentioned that I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance. [I have a personal preference for Tarox branded brake discs and pads due to good experience with them on a different car. What do you lot find works best for a car like the E90 330D for HARD braking, fast road only not track?] Last edited by Dr Forinor; 05-01-2016 at 07:35 AM.. |

Check whats fitted first, as later E90 330d's already have the 335 brakes.
The rear brakes are the same on both models anyway so nothing to change there. For disks just buy decent quality plain disks. Drilled/grooved are just cosmetic and have downsides; The grooves make the disks noisey, and drilled holes can often crack. Pads are what makes all the difference. If you like Tarox stuff then no reason why not to stick with then. |

I can only assume they are the smaller discs & calipers fitted cos the braking on the car is absolute crap. But how do I check for sure?

My problem is I am not 100% on what I need in the first place. I need guidance on what parts are needed to swap between the small brakes to the bigger brakes. So far we have; - Calipers - Caliper carriers - Hoses - Discs - Pads Is that all?

measure the disk.
330d brakes are 330mm in diameter and 24mm thick 335 brakes are 345mm and 30mm thick. I believe most LCI E90's got the upgraded parts. E92's seem to have gone the other way, with early cars having the bigger brakes and later ones going back to the smaller setup. No idea what BMW were upto. The caliper and carrier sort of comes together as one piece, its unlikely someone breaking a car would split them, but if your buying new you'd need both parts. But yes, otherwise your list is correct. You'll probably want a new wear sensor too. FWIW, my 330d has the smaller 330mm brakes and they're anything but poor, i find the braking excellent. The usual issue with brakes is poor quality consumables and generally poor condition/lack of maintenance, the only thing you gain from the bigger disks is a little more thermal capacity. |

I think I have come from a background of where I had very big brakes on a car that was designed with smaller brakes (for my first fast car) and that made a massive difference. And then my next car was basically a supercar of sorts which had amazing brakes. I am in the habit (or was in the habit) of braking very late and braking very hard. With my current brakes I don't have much confidence in them.
I will measure them though, thank you. Just noticed you are in Fife, not far from Dundee at all

Measured them now and they are definitely 330mm, with a horribly weedy looking caliper size (IMO).

The 335 stuff should be a reasonable upgrade then. Are you actually getting fade?
I find even with the 330mm brakes i can brake hard enough to get the ABS chriping. It could just be your brakes need a good overhaul with new disks and some decent pads, but ofcourse if your doing that, the cost of upgrading to the 335 stuff isnt that much more, so might as well just go bigger. |

I do agree that my discs and pads do need replaced without a doubt, but even at low speeds, they just don't have any "urgency" (for want of a better word) to them.
I can't push them hard enough to even achieve fade as I have no confidence in them to brake late/hard enough. Even if the new discs/pads sort the problem, as far as I am concerned, bigger is always better when it comes to brakes so I'm gonna upgrade no matter what haha! Cheers for the advice.

I find the brakes on my 330D pretty awful to be honest.
I am about to put on 335D calipers with new pads and discs and also new pads and discs on the rear. As mentioned the rears are the same on both cars whereas fronts have far larger calipers and 348mm x 30mm discs. Been told the front are plug and play so to speak. Happy to post pictures of the calipers if you want. |

If you don't mind, can you also please let me know the part numbers that you ordered? Were they OEM or aftermarket? Thanks.

Will get some pics up tomorrow. The discs, pads and wear indicators are all Pagid(might be a bad move according to some) but the price for it all was too good to pass up.

Below are pictures of the 335D Front setup with Pagid discs, pads and wear sensors. I don't know the exact caliper part numbers but you basically need to look out for the numbers on them as this tells you disc size needed.

No worries, the front disc part number is 54553. But if you pop onto Ebay and type BMW 335i/d there are loads of different types. Just make sure they are 348x30mm.
Yes I think it will be a very good upgrade for me as my front brakes look very tired. Plus the fact I will be doing all 4 corners. Hoping not to lose too much fluid when I remove the old front calipers. |

My plan is for the bigger calipers up front, Tarox discs and pads up front and EBC discs and pads up back.

Erm, this may be a little late to be asking this, but do the 335D brakes fit behind 18" wheels?
