Car hire in USA Mustang vs Camaro SS

Off to Florida later this year and am looking to rent a car while out there. Been looking around and don't really fancy renting a boggo standard car. Last time out in the USA - Hawaii rented a convertible mustang which didn't come across as the best of cars bit slow and wallowy all things considered

So this time time round am considering either a Mustang coupe (£440) or a Camaro SS ( £750) which has sat nav saving £130 or so on renting one and a V8

So my questions are has any one rented either as I believe they're using the newer Mustangs and also are the rear seats going to big enough for the two Fat Kids ?

Ps did consider a M4 vert but that was over £1k couldn't man maths that ...yet

Thanks all

Go for the M4 saving you £250 worth of faff working out the others cars, therefore the same price as the Camaro :-)

Did wonder myself on that one as well. Use SS designation in Austrakia as well - look up the Maloo truly psychotic bit of machinery.

Do like to drive ( and drink) something local , not at the same time of course.

Kal001 buy a satnav when you get there, you can get a tomtom for $99 and you can take it with you each time you go to the States.

I've driven both Mustang 2.3 Eco boost and Camero 3.5 litre V6 in Florida. The Camero is the better drive given that most of your driving will be on roads so smooth you'll think you're floating.

Don't even do that.

Get an older Garmin for around 20 quid or less on ebay and you can get the maps for free on the net and just replace the sd card with US rather than W Eur. Simple map change by swapping the file on the SD card.

I've been doing this the last 8 years and have had plenty of mates borrow it to do the same. Not just useful for the US, but anywhere you go.

Mines a 710 Nuvi.

Good idea but that is a bit too techno for me.

Oddly enough a friend is using my usa tom tom as we speak in Chicago. The car hire firms really take the piss with satnav charges over there.

Or.... you have a smart phone?

Download any one of the tons of FREE SatNav apps.

Here Maps has FULL offline maps world wide.

Then pickup a Kenau Air Frame (to hold the phone on the air vent) and a USB Cig lighter charger.
Done for under £30.

Hire Car companies really take the piss with charges. Even been offered it when the car keys I have just been handed say "NAV" on the end! (Didnt book a car with Nav, but was given one with anyway)

Tbh have the America maps down loaded on an earlier Tom Tom anyway.

It was man maths justifying the Camaro

Bearing in Mind I've had to upgrade the airplane seating might as well upgrade the driving experience as well. Never driven a v8 car before and think I should !

Would have gone for the M4 but it's silly money.

If there's a decent there and back drive to do why not swap over? Maybe you'd prefer more beach time over Hertz office though...

Yup tend to agree we knock the old 'Yank Tanks' in this country but they work very well on the roads over there.

Many many years ago, me and an old girlfriend decided to do a 3 week road trip starting in Miami. Rented a 5L Mustang vert thinking it would be the most fun, for a trip taking in Key West, Daytona, Kennedy Space Centre, Clearwater, etc. Wrong... in Florida in the summer you absolutely cook in a drop top! Spent most of the time with the roof up and a/c on, and driving the car was like driving a waterbed, plus on the few roads where you were allowed to do 60mph, it would overheat! Modern Mustangs are hopefully a lot better, but I wouldn't hire a convertible again.

Must have been about half the age I am now in that photo... (cringe!)

Know what you mean had a convertible mustang 5 yrs ago in Hawaii still wallowy but great for the scenery. This time it's looking like a fastback mustang. Hidden charges on the Camaro have pushed it upto £1k which man maths can justify even to me.

Take a look on Amazon at the Tomtom 5100 or 6100. Comes with lifetime world maps and lifetime speed cameras. Both 5 and 6 inch version have sim card built in so no data costs ever. It was on sale for £219 for the 6 inch version. Has touchscreen for pinch to zoom etc.
