Buying cherished plates for young kids
Even though my son is only 6, I was wondering people's views on buying him a cherished plate and sticking it on retention for 10 years. It now only seems to cost £85 to retain for 10 years.
I'm not sure it will go up in value, but in 11 years time, number plates with his initials may not exist. The potential risk is that some law comes into play that cherished plates are not allowed .....or he never passes his test! From previous threads, I know there are mixed views on personalised plates..... |

If you like it and want him to have it, buy it
He can put it on his flying car

You have totally went about this the wrong way.
Find a decent cheap plate, then when son daughter born, register them with name on number plate. Job sorted. My daughter OBD653B was imensely happy when I suprised her with her cherished plate. Friends and family where shocked I actually managed to get one that matched exactly..... Little did they know |

OP what happens if your 6 year old gets to 17 and really dislikes private plates, a lot of people find them somewhat pathetic. I would put some money away on a regular basis and let him choose what to spend it on but ETTO If I had given my boy a private plate for his 17th birthday he would have kicked me in the nuts and called me a cunt |

I don't get why people call them private plates. The only way they're private is if you don't put them on the car. If they're on display, anyone on the road can see them which hardly makes them private
It's the same with posting those "private" pictures of your Mrs on the internet. Once posted, they're no longer private |

ETTO but I wouldn't bother. In ten years time plates might not be needed. Look what happened to tax discs.
Thinking back to when I got a car at 17. Not sure I'd have put a private plate on my rusty escort 1.1 "popular". Now if you missed a bit of the story out and along with private plate you are buying him new shiney swanky car fair enough |

The plate on my car is for my 5 year old when he is old enough, bought it when he was 1.
I have my eyes on one for my 11 month old son but cannot afford to get it at the moment, just hope it stays around. If it's one with name, initials and DOB then get it if you can, you might not find it again. |

A few of my mates have 'foreign' names, I put it down as cheating, one of them his number plate has AMM which is apparently his name or bit of it.
I know a few people that bought Squadron number plates. |

I bought one for my girl as soon as the reg was available, it's the second closest to her name, her "exact" name came up on auction last year but was well out of my league at over £20K. I just bought it as I'm pretty sure it would have sold quickly if I hadn't bought it. OK buying an initials plate for a boy but I wouldn't pay much for an initials plate for a girl as it won't be any use to her once she's married. Neither my wife or I have ever had a private plate and if she doesn't want it I'm fairly confident I will be able to sell it on for at least what I paid for it.

Both my daughters already have matching reg plates, they are 11 and 13 now, had one plate since 2010 and got the other in 2014. Getting the second was quite stressful as I wanted it to match the first.
Great news on the new retention pricing, that was a pleasant surprise when it came through. |
