No use a bit of logic.

If I backed horses which I gave up some years ago I would suggest Holywell at 16-1 and Ballynagour at 50-1. Both have good form round Aintree and would like drier ground.

They have top trainers in Jonjo O'Neill and David Pipe. At 50-1 Ballynagour who showed signs of a return to form at Cheltenham is very well priced each way.

Yes. Don't bet on it. Whipping horse to make them jump 7' fences is barbaric.

Sorry CC obviously I completely disgree but I do respect your point of view. Also fences are at least 2 feet below your description and whips are used basically at the finish.

also a lot of people on this forum thrash their 3 series unmercifully - I think they should be stopped too!!

Sadly 11 horses have died at the GN since 2000. And the whips are very definitely used to push the horses on. There is so much money at stake. The animals well-being isn't what it could be.

But not as well as they could be. Hard to comprehend hitting any animal is justified. Let alone to make a couple of bob.

Playing devil advocate here then

Whipping a horse to bet on is cruel, but cutting a cows throat so you can sit on it's skin in your car isn't?

An update ----O'Failins Boy fell so did my Holywell (at the second!!)

Ballynagour was making progress but unseated rider at the 19th.

Never mind cruelty, this proves conclusively that racing is the sport of queens but betting is the sport of mugs. Better luck next year.

The same cow that is humanly killed?

I'm no tree hugging lefty Lesbo by any means. But it's proven that whipping a horse multiple time doesn't make it go faster. The horse responds the the whip at first. hen gets confused as to why it's still being hit after it sped up (done as required)

I bet those cows would prefer a whipping than being 'humanly killed' Wouldn't you? And I'm not a leftty tree hugger either. But it does amaze me that people have different values depending on the cutness factor of animals.

Would you humanly kill your dog to sit on his skin in your car?

But isn't the cow skin used in your car a byproduct of the meat that we get from the animal?

TBH I am not sure but if that is the case then it puts a slightly different complexion on your argument, which I don't necessarily disagree with

Definitely it is. Their might be some top end car makers who claim and indeed do rear cows for their hide quality. But I doubt they just throw the meat away. For the rest, the meat is far more valuable than the hide.

So if you was walking down a street and witnessed someone flogging a dog with a stick, you'd just keep walking?

Although interestingly given supermarket pricing for meat these days, the sale of by products like skin and bone are often the difference between profit and loss for the firms that supply meat....

Anyway, I thought they had introduced rules on use of whip, how often, when etc....

They redesigned it a while ago to be softer. They passed a rule saying it should be used in a backhand motion. They also said a horse didn't feel pain like a human.

But studies have shown the horse to have just as thin a hypodermis as humans. Like one famous Jockey quoted. If no riders were allowed to use the whip. You would still have a winner.
