Slight/minor Suspension Clunk
So I recently purchased a well maintained 2006 325i with 70k miles driven by a 65 year old lady. Local roads here are very good with hardly any pot holes. Now that being said, I would like to tighten up my suspension components a bit as I have a slight rattle or clunk on uneven pavement/minor bumps on the road. I don’t think an average person may even notice this but having OCD and all, I would like to fix this =)
I don’t plan to bring my car to the dealer or indy but rather work on it myself starting off with the little things. For those who have a Honda while growing up, this sounds like a Honda that has a tie rod that is almost failing. Should I start by replacing the Sway Bar bushings? Lubricate the control arm bushings? Any DIY’s links would help as well. Shocks/Struts seem to be still intact. Another question, I noticed my front shock dust boot is ripped. Should I just leave it as is or just pull it out? Thank you in advance. |

Sway bar end links are the first place to look for that noise. OEM shocks/struts on these cars don't usually last past 50K miles so don't be surprised if those are worn out.

Not sure. I've only done suspension work on non-xdrive. I know the front end suspension is a little different between the two. You can plug in your VIN at realoem.com and find the exact part number for your VIN and go from there.

Before you go willie nillie on replacing things find the source of the noise first. End links might very well be the problem but if this car has only OEM and not touched I doubt it. Best way I know of is to get a rubber mallet and put it up on a drive on lift and jacks and bang around until you find it.
