Question just bought a 2009 335i :) key fob question..

hey guys , today i bought a 2009 335i from auction with some damage on it. When i picked the car up there was no keys with it, as it was stated the car came with keys the auction location agreed i was owed a key and ordered a key and will be shipping it to me within a week.

Now from what i understand from searching, this will be a blank key fob, cut for my VIN, but will need to be programmed to my car.

A few questions still remain though, since i currently have no keys, will i be able to program the blank un-programmed key ? Is it really true all i have to do is stick it in the slot for 20 seconds? i just want to confirm that this is true even if i dont currently have a working programmed key fob.

Im so thrilled to get this repair going so i can enjoy the car
any info or advice on this key topic would be greatly appreciated

if it' a dealer ordered key, its not a blank, it's preprogrammed specifically for your car. I just went through it, it worked right out of the gate with no issues / reprogramming.

If it's not programmed for your car it won't work.

If you could self-program by inserting a blank key for 20 seconds... that would make BMWs the easiest car in the world to steal.

I've heard some things about the remote function of the key being able to be self-syncing or something like that, but the programming to start the car must be done by BMW (actually I think it's done at BMW NA and overnighted to the dealer). There may be a locksmith out there who can do it if you have a blank key, but I think they only way to get a blank key is from BMW (if they even will sell them blank), so it makes sense to just order the key ready to go from BMW.

And just in case anyone is wondering, a used key cannot be reprogrammed to a different car. People make the mistake of buying ebay keys all the time. Unless you are just interested in the buttons or case.

ok thanks for the advice guys,i guess i will find out when i get the keys whether or not i have to take it to bmw once i repair it( tow it ) or if its programmed to my car. kind of hard to tell when an auctioner tells you they will get you keys whether or not it will be out of the box ready, thanks though

If it has comfort access, I think it has to be programmed by bmw. If no CA, then you just put it in the slot and hold for 20 second. A used key will never work. Has to be a new key ordered specifically for your vin.

you are not far from truth, homemade key-emulator put in cell phone block with OBDII coming out of it. Broken window and 30sec with obd to start car, most cars with correct/specific hardware.

2 ryanboosts914:
If you have comfort access, then dealer may need to program car or the key to work with CA (only 2 key fobs total at one time can have CA active)

Sea as many as possible "100k" threads and see what problems people encountered.
Change serpentine belt right away if it wasn't changed recently or car wasn't mobile for a while. Inspect pulleys.
Check for any oil leaks.
All fluids that weren't changes as well as transmission oil and filter.
Be on top of service
Every time before driving - give it some pray so you won't get stranded =)
P.S. I'm at 150k
